Music Review: Excellent compilaton of country flavoured pop/rock. 85/100

The compilation I bought recently by Ronstadt is quite similar to this one, so, I am guessing that maybe I have a newer compilation, or a different version of this cd was released in countries like Australia (my cd has the same title, but is listed as a remastered version, for 2002), where I live. My cd has 23 songs, two more than this one, and it is missing two songs from this compilation ("Love is a rose" and "Adios"). This compilation does not have 5 songs my compilation has ("After the goldrush", a Neil Young cover, which I liked; "Heat wave"; "The blue train"; "How do I make you?"; and "Desperado", a cover of an Eagles' song). The ordering of the tracks is also different too...might have to check on my cd's release date etc.
Linda Ronstadt is not the kind of artist you hear anymore on the kind of classic pop/rock stations that I listen to. No doubt she gets played here, but probably on radio stations which cater to an older audience. This is a pity, in my view, as she has a fine, smooth voice, and her vocals can be in a rock style at times.
My favourite songs on my compilation are:
Different drum: this is a song I knew of and liked, but was pleasantly surprised to learn that Linda sang it. It has an excellent arrangement, featuring bass, interesting sounding strings, a viola or cello or something like that, and a harpsichord, perhaps. Linda's vocals soar in this song. It has a classic 60's feel to it...like a fine wine, it improves with age.
Poor poor pitiful me: is a witty, amusing song as it wallows in self-pity. Has more soaring vocals and features a rock style lead guitar.
You're no good: Linda's vocal journey is good here-breathy vocals to glassy vocals and then more forceful. Has a nice groove to the accoustic guitar and keyboard.
All my life: has lots of hooks. Features a pretty keyboard melody and pretty vocal melodies by both Linda and her male co vocalist. A melody in this song reminded me of the main melody in a good Semisonic song callled "Closing time".
It's so easy: Linda's vocals range from glassy to phlegmy in this song. It's all good though.
Blue Bayou: has a country flavoured guitar twang and Linda's voice varies from gentle to soaring.
There are quite a few other songs I like on my compilation, but I won't go too much into them, except to say that on some songs you can compare her to Enya (as in "Winter light"), whilst at other times she sounds like a 50's rock'n'roller ("Back in the USA"), or a country pop/rock artist (as in "When will I be loved?"). I really enjoyed her duets with singers like Aaron Neville, on many ballads in this compilation.
It was a pleasure to rediscover Linda's re-interpretations of songs after not having heard her songs for such a long time. There is a wide variety of instruments and sounds in this cd (country, rock, ballad, pop/orchestral sounds, xylophone, honky tonk piano, accoustic to rock guitars etc).
If you like easy listening, middle of the road music or soft rock, Rondstadt is a fine interpreter of this kind of music, and her vocals have a surprisingly harder, 'rock' edge to it than I remembered.
A nice pick up.

Import edition of this all encompassing compilation features two more tracks than the domestic, including four exclusive tracks, 'After The Gold Rush' (with Valerie Carter & Emmylou Harris), 'The Blue Train', 'How Do I Make You', & 'Desperado'. This is Linda's first and only career-spanning single-disc hits collection gathering tracks released on Capitol and Elektra/Asylum between 1967 and 1993. Features the #1 pop smash 'You're No Good', plus Top-10 classics 'When Will I Be Loved', 'Blue Bayou', and 'It's So Easy'. Warner.Linda Ronstadt, who emerged from SoCal's vaunted early-'70s country-folk scene, became the American female rock superstar of the Me Decade. After the initial success of the Stone Poneys' Michael Nesmith-penned "Different Drum," Ronstadt expanded her horizons through interpretations of a long string of successful pop and R&B covers. Along the way she championed emerging songwriters like Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me") and contemporary favorites like Neil Young ("Love Is a Rose") in the bargain. As the formula waned with the changing tastes of the '80s, she briefly turned to new wave before stepping boldly back to the pop standards of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Unfortunately, this collection inexplicably skips over that three-album collaboration with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle, a body of work that presaged the 1990s' lounge-pop revival by a full decade--and outclassed it by miles. It also eschews a compelling contemporary Latin chapter of her career in favor of her winning collaborations with Aaron Neville ("Don't Know Much" and "All My Life") and less successful AC fodder like "Winter Light" and "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram.
