Music Review: It's No Secret that Linda Eder has a hit with this one

Anyone who has not heard of Linda Eder, listen up. The news is out, there's no hiding this voice anymore. "It's No Secret Anymore," Eder's fourth CD is clear proof that Eder is here to stay and she's brought a hefty dose of talent and charisma with her. Eder's voice is a weapon against all those supposed artists who like to pretend that they can sing because there voice has been fed through a mixer and masked and altered fifteen times. Pure and unadulterated, Eder shines on her newest album, taking us through the simplest melodies to the most moving ballads to the sexiest, jazziest songs. Still not sure? Think Judy Garland mixed with Barbara Streisand for power, throw in a little Frank Sinatra for some mood, pepper vigorously with a dose of the blues and some jazz, and shake (don't stir). What you end up with is a hint of Eder. You have to imagine a sultry and flowing voice and a charisma that reaches through the speakers before you get really close. As one person I know put it, "She could make you listen to music you don't normally like because she's good." "It's No Secret Anymore" is Eder's newest collection of that good stuff she's been sending out for the past eight years or so. Her material is all new, written for the most part by her husband and composer Frank Wildhorn. Wildhorn also wrote songs for Whitney Houston and several other now famous stars. The CD is a mix of jazz and blues songs, some pop tunes, a little latin beat and a few pieces that are reminiscent of the stage. The title track "It's No Secret Anymore," "You Never Remind Me," and "This Time Around" are all similar to Sinatra in style, but carry Eder's charming sense of humor and irony in the tunes. Bold and brassy, she is all classic swing and sultry and sexy choruses. She never forgets, however, that she is completely and utterly human and her self-deprecating sense of humor and the sheer emotion touches something in the listener. I'm not sure what that something might be; I only know that my jaw is still somewhere on the floor and I've yet to find it. "Havanna" (from an upcoming musical of the same name) suddenly sends you on a Cuban vacation with a heated blend of rhythm and passionate singing. "Never Dance" has a similar affect: Destination Rio. I was dancing around my dorm room to this one, swept up in something that forced me to get up from my chair and move. I don't dance. If you don't, do it anyway, you don't have much choice with Eder urging you on. "Romancin' the Blues," "Little Things," and "One For My Baby" have taken on a lower, jazzier style that Eder pulls off in perfect contrast with her soaring voice. Low, high, doesn't seem to matter. She can make the low notes ease and slink just as beautifully as she can send the high ones floating into the stratosphere. It is that soaring voice that carries "Vienna," "Why Do People Fall In Love" and "Even Now" into a new realm of ballads. Sad and aching "Even Now" is easily the highlight of a CD that is filled with highlights. "Vienna" is a re-recording of a song that appeared on Eder's first CD. A little older and wiser, Eder has imbued the song with a new sense of remembrance. This woman, and this CD, are nothing short of amazing. With the capacity to be confident and soaring and gentle and sad the next, Eder has taken the essence of what music should be and wrapped it in a voice that's spun of silver and gold. Aptly titled, "It's No Secret Anymore," is just that. The secret is out. Eder has arrived, and with a voice like hers, there's no more hiding.
