Music Review: Linda Eder Serves up a Splendid Collection of Christmas Classics

There are just some things that make me believe in God - some things that are so pure and beautiful that you know a higher power is at work. Linda Eder's voice is one of those things. Listening to Christmas Stays the Same was a religious experience! The title track of the cd gets one in the nostalgic mood of the holiday season - remembering all the Christmases of past melding into present. It reminds us that time may pass, but the heart of Christmas, and its traditions remain the same. There is a bittersweet beauty to this song that makes me long to go back and experience one of the Christmases of my childhood one more time.
Other highlights on this cd are Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Ms. Eder has long credited Judy Garland as the major musical influence in her life, and she does this rendition proud. It stands on equal footing, for me, with Garland's, although, I find this version strikes a happier cord. There's still the longing, but it's not as sad as the original.
Do You Hear What I Hear is the most brilliant and interesting interpretation of a song that I've ever heard. The rhythmic beat and exquisitely harmonized lead as well as chorale back-up, makes this a truly unforgettable version. I find that I hit the "replay" button a lot with regard to this track.
Christmas Through a Child's Eyes is very tender and heartfelt - especially when one realizes that Ms. Eder and her ex-husband wrote this song for their son. The magic and wonder of Christmas is lovingly conveyed here and shines through like the warmth of the sun on a snowy winter day.
Silent Night. Oh. My. God! Prepare to experience chills when you listen. This is, by far, the best version of Silent Night I've ever heard. It's pure and ethereal, no other words for it! I give it five stars and a 21 gun salute! It is simply glorious!
Ave Maria is stellar! I daresay that Ms. Eder's version rivals the great Callas', and that's really saying something. What is so fascinating about Ms. Eder's ability to deliver a song, is that her voice is so rich and her range is so wide. Yet, she has the most precise restraint in how high and long to hit and hold the notes. It is both remarkable and a testament to an artist who is a complete master of their instrument the way Ms. Eder is of her voice.
I also appreciate the subtle upbeat rendering of O Holy Night - another brilliant interpretation. It's still as reverent as the traditional rendition, but divinely uplifts the spirit in a way that makes the heart feel what true joy is. I think a person could easily forego Midnight Service, light a candle and listen to the holy trilogy of Silent Night, Ave Maria and O Holy Night to get the peaceful, wondrous, magical feeling of this season and its meaning. That's what these songs achieve: allowing the listener to truly understand the veneration of the savior's birth
The Bells of St. Paul's is a joyous song to end on. Ms. Eder's voice sounds the way velvet feels: smooth and soft, and is rich, like sweet, melting chocolate - luxurious - that's what she is! This cd is my all-time favorite holiday collection. It should be a staple among everyone's holiday library. I feel blessed after I listen to it, and thank God for the gift of this voice, as well as Ms. Eder for sharing it with us.
