Music Review: What Wynton's career was keyed up for!!!A 5 Stars
It's been said in earlier reviews but again wanted this on my list.I think that there maybe no-one who has technical chops on trumpet than Wynton Marsalis (he one Grammy for best jazz and classical recordings in one year) but I have not enjoyed many of his small group CD's (Black Codes Was good and a few live efforts).Nor do I think his dominance of Ken Burns series with it's neo-con approach to jazz selection and criticism has been good for jazz.But Marsalis is a great for his expansion of interest in jazz and leadership of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.Not that there haven't been problems there.I found it discriminatory.Not racially but in it's ageism.When it got off ground under Marsalis many great players who were not in his age peer group were not offered a slot as if Marsalis was saying "It's our time you guys had yours".But enough bagging on Wynton.When I was listening to the radio and heard him play in quartet with Elvin Jones,Reginald Veal and Marcus Roberts play Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" it may have been the most incredible thing I have ever heard on record certainly on technical level from a trumpet or perhaps any player.So technique and skill thumbs up politics and taste....well.But all that aside this is what Wyntons own sensibilities and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra band was built for.Duke.It always come back to him.Be it Mingus's career which I submit was one long love letter to Duke to contemporary master David Murray,be the recent Ellington Centennial or tomorrow it all beings and in a sense returns to Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington in terms of music (none of the great writers like Gershwin,Porter,Berlin,Rogers compare).
But this band takes the repertoire we all know like "Cottontail","C-Jam Blues",Black And Tan Fantasy",or "Mood Indigo" all played as well as anybody since Duke himself but here we are treated some killer tunes like opener "Happy Go Local",Main Stem",and Harlem Air Shaft".One of my great regrets was not seeing the 2000 tour of the LCJO that toured with swing dancers and why no DVD was made is a mystery to me.This is great music.Period.And it's full of crack LOCJ stars who have become stars in their won right like Cyrus Chestnutt on keys,Wessell" Warm Daddy" Anderson and Ted Nash on altos's,Wycleff Gordon on Trombone among others greats.Guests include non other than Illinois Jacquette who was probably the longest lasting swing reedman in history and a wonderful Diane Reeves vocal on "Blip Blip".If you get this and it appeals you might also check out "They Came To Swing" and earlier effort with a more diversified set list.That's a four and half star effort.But these guys by temperament are the Ellington outfit of the modern era and if all they did was re-interpret Ellington it would not be a bad career for them of us.This is a must get.
