Music reviews of Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored WaterMusic Review: The truth about this album: it's mediocre Rating: 3 Stars
Just when Limp Bizkit started to actually seem like a good band with some potential and credible songwriting skills (after albums like 1999's "Significant Other"), they release "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water" in 2000. I do not think this album, itself, was a sell-out, because a lot of bands make two albums and release them only one year apart from each other (does anyone remember Korn's "Issues" or "Take a Look in the Mirror?"), and some bands (like System of a Down) even release two albums in the same year! However, I do think releasing five singles (songs which are played on the radio) was a sell-out. Plus, I believe making one music video is OK- I don't think that's selling out- but Fred Durst made music videos for five songs, and he even made several videos for the same song (i.e. "Rollin'"). This was also a greedy move. So, Limp Bizkit did not sell-out just because they released this album (it was what they did after this album that deserves being called "selling-out").
"Chocolate Starfish" has its high and low points, but it is ultimately not as terrible as everyone else is saying. Let me point out that nobody thought this album was bad until Wes Borland said they were a sell-out band (when he left the group in 2001). Now, I'm not an idiot, I know this isn't the smartest written piece of music you can find; but most of the songs are undeniably catchy and flat-out fun to listen to! And, generally, there is enough good guitar work to make up for the songs with stupid lyrics. So, this is a very uneven album with several hits and several misses. The best way the prove this to you is to give a rundown of every track...so here it is:
1. Intro-This opening track has a weird robotic voice, which says things like "This is not a dream...this is reality." This can be kind of trippy to listen to it, but it's just an short, pointless intro and it goes on too long. I always skip this track. Rating: 2/10.
2. Hot Dog- The first real song on this album sure makes an impression. Even though yelling the F word over 50 times on one song did what it was supposed to (draw a "buzz" around this album, and make it famous), everyone knows that this song's lyrics are pretty terrible. At one point, Fred even goes as far to boast that he's said the f word 46 times. Anybody who makes a boast like that can't be taken seriously and should probably be thought of as a self parody. Plus, it's hard to believe Fred's anger on "Hot Dog," because it was written by the same guy who wrote such peaceful tracks as "Rearranged." Fortunately, Wes Borland's guitars and DJ Lethal's turntables come through, making this track less than a complete disaster. Rating: 6/10.
3. My Generation- This is one of the two lead singles (Fred released two singles at the same time). This track has a great excitement and energy, and it is also quite catchy and fun to listen to. I enjoy the end, when DJ Lethal makes an appearance and does some fast scratching. Lyrically, this song is about blaming everything that's bad in this world on kids. These lyrics should appeal and be relatable to most teenagers. Rating: 8/10.
4. Full Nelson- A dark vibe runs throughout this one. The very violent and angry lyrics ultimately come across sounding repetitive and simple. This song is centered around the chorus: "You'll get knocked the f- out!," and this is also the third track in a row to be completely focused on profanity. Nice, loud, lumbering guitar riffs, though. Rating: 5/10.
5. My Way- If you listen to the radio...you've heard this song. It's the first semi-ballad of the album, with OK lyrics (which are very depressing), an OK melody, and some OK guitar riffs. Rating: 8/10.
6. Rollin'- The second lead single. In the opening, Fred lamely addresses the listener as both "partner" and "baby." Even I will admit this song is dumb, embarrassing, and pointless...but it's one of those tracks that gets by because it is just fun to listen to. I'm not in love with this song, and it, even still, couldn't help but get stuck in my head. If there are any Limp Bizkit fans left, "Rollin'" should be a concert favorite and it should get the mosh pits swirling. It's a great song to get pumped up to. Rating: 6/10.
7. Livin' It Up- A throwaway track. Fred tries to make this a rap song, but its absolutely horrible lyrics, which don't even rhyme half the time, really drag it down. It also has another really lame boast ("I'm just a crazy motherf-er!") In all seriousness, this might be the worst rap-rock song ever! Rating: 0/10.
8. One- Another throwaway. It's an OK ballad with some OK melody, but this song is very out of place and Fred's singing is weak. Rating: 3/10.
9-Getcha Groove On- Features a cameo by Xzibit. Some OK rapping on this one, but this is also, ultimately, a rather unimpressive song. Rating: 6/10.
10. Take a Look Around- The theme to "Mission Impossible: 2" is also one of this album's best tracks. Even some Limp Bizkit haters will admit that this song has some of Fred's best and most mature lyrics (such as "Life is a lesson/you learn it when you're through"), and this song also has some great guitar and bass riffs. The end is calm and restrained, while Fred almost whispers, but then it explodes. I also enjoy the bobbing guitar riffs and drum beat near the end. Rating: 10/10.
11. It'll Be OK- An OK and very depressing track. I listened to it and was depressed for the rest of the night. This song's beginning and verses are ballad-esque, but the guitars eventually kick in and make it heavier. You should steer clear of this song if a) you are a suicidal, or b) you couldn't care less about Fred or his feelings. Rating: 7/10.
12. Boiler- A song which was probably written so Fred could rant and rage and get some things off his chest. The music and all around sound are OK on this one, but I just wish Fred would shut up. I like the ending, though, when an instrument that sounds like a piano makes an appearance. Rating: 6/10.
13. Hold On- Maybe the most mature, melodic, and best song on the album. It was produced -and features some guest vocals- by Scott Weiland. You may hate me for saying this, but there is actually some very good singing and lyrics on here. Rating: 10/10.
14. Rollin'- Features some guest rapping by DMX, Redman and Method Man. This dance club hit has some more OK rapping, with some new lyrics, but this remix of "Rollin'" isn't as catchy as track 6 (it's more annoying, too). Rating: 5/10.
15. Outro- An interview with Ben Stiller about what he likes about Limp Bizkit. The beginning of this skit is very pointless, but the end (which is Ben Stiller laughing maniacally and endlessly) is where it turns to one of the most annoying things I have ever heard! Rating: 0/10.
Overall rating: 82/150.
Overall rating without the intro and outro: 80/130.
So, in conclusion, "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water" has its moments, but is ultimately just a mediocre album. It is NOT a terrible album, but I CAN understand why some people would think that. Personally, this album kept me entertained for a few months, but I've more-or-less grown out of it. "Chocolate Starfish" should appeal to some people (i.e. angry teenagers) more than others, and if you're looking for a C.D. to get pumped up to, or if you want a C.D. to listen to when you're depressed, angry, or in a bad mood...this is for you. My last word of advice is to listen to these songs with an open mind and don't take them too seriously.
