Music reviews of Rebirth [Deluxe Edition]

Music Review: Do NOT Waste Your Time Or Your Money
Rating: 1 Stars

Lil Wayne's Rebirth [Deluxe Edition] is simply put `one of those albums that should NOT have happened.' High (no pun intended) off of the triple platinum, Grammy award winning effort Tha Carter III, 'Rebirth' comes as promised as Lil Wayne's `rock album.' True to his word, 'Rebirth' features more rock-oriented production work and even more notably `singing' (err... autotune) from the rapper. Kanye West tried singing (autotune) as well on 2008's 808s & Heartbreak, the difference being his effort, despite its flaws and sagging moments, works more effectively - particularly given its minimalistic production work. On Rebirth, Wayne attempts the big anthemic refrains that often characterize rock music with less avail because it just feels ill suiting that any rapper without a history of singing or dabbling in rock music would attempt to record a rock album. In my humble opinion, given the number of date shifts for Rebirth, I believe even Wayne finds this album to be a throwaway. Sure, there are a FEW worthy cuts, but overall, this just does not highlight the talent that Lil Wayne is to hip-hop music or music in general.

"American Star," featuring Shanell aka SNL (whoever she is!), is not to bad, but it is not valedictory by any means either. The production work is good and accomplishes Lil Wayne's goals of featuring rock and roll centric production, but does it really suit Wayne ultimately? Shanell's vocals are sound here, but not even her contribution really causes the listener to `jump out of their seats with excitement.' "Prom Queen," also featuring SNL, is a better cut, but nothing epic. This served as the first single for Rebirth, as well as the first sign `do not buy this album.' The auto tune quickly grows annoying, though a decent, though not great refrain causes this cut to be one of the better ones of this questionable album.

"Ground Zero" may possibly be the worst cut, featuring an overdrawn instrumental intro and a ridiculous performance by Lil Wayne. Wayne's assertiveness is appreciated, but he takes everything `over-the-top' which takes away from it. "Da Da Da" is almost as bad if not as abad, finding Wayne's vocals way over-processed with studio effects. The gimmicks have grown cheesy by this point and some of the repetitions are just downright sad. For a rapper with one of the greatest hip-hop IQ's in recent times, it is sad to find him resort to such rubbish as this. "Paradice," features nice production work, but again the woes of vocal effects and a rather lukewarm performance make this another losing cut.

"Get A Life," though ridiculous by all means, provides some saving grace to the album, though do not look for a remake of "A Milli" by any means. "On Fire" is even stronger, rivaling `B' cuts that could appear on any of his truly `hip-hop' affairs. Why "On Fire" works better is because the production leans the slightest bit more `hip-hop' than `rock,' despite some rock over- and undertones. "Drop The World," featuring Eminem is the album's best cut and the saving grace that helped Rebirth be certified gold. The production work on this cut is epic, Wayne actually sounds inspired, and Eminem's verse is sick. Maybe he should have saved "Drop The World" for I Am Not A Human Being or Tha Carter IV!

"Runnin," featuring SNL once more returns back to more rock-centric production work and kills the slight bit of momentum aroused by "Get A Life," "On Fire," and "Drop the World." SNL's vocals are too manic for my tastes, given the fact that Wayne does little to build up a grand crescendo to SNL's massive, anthemic refrain. "One Way Trip," featuring humdrum rocker Kevin Rudolf underachieves as well, with the sole redeeming factor being Travis Barker's drumming. Nicki Minaj does not even come close to saving "Knockout," an utterly ridiculous cut filled with more overindulgence via vocal processing. On the standard edition, "The Price Is Wrong," an uptempo ditty, closes the album - on a sour note. The Deluxe edition, adds "I'll Die For You," and "I'm So Over You" - do not waste your money.

Disappointed? No, because I had faith that this album would be absolutely ridiculous in the first place. I just wanted to hear HOW BAD this album would be. It has more uninspired moments than redeeming ones, unfortunately. Fortunately for Wayne, his new EP, 'I Am Not A Human Being,' is nothing but "fire" and his upcoming The Carter IV should wow hip-hop lovers everywhere. As for this effort, I would NOT waste my time or money and if you do, opt for the standard edition.
