Music Review: One of the best guitarists of all time

Before there was Jimmie Hendrix, or Van Halen, or Santana, there was Les Paul. Most people only think of the guitar when they hear his name, and most Les Paul owners probably never knew he was one of the most successful guitarists of the early 50s with several top billboard hits. Les Paul started recording during the mid 40s and most of his big songs were recorded during his golden years in the 50s, and even a few 60s songs. Les Paul was one of the biggest pioneers in music, and you can tell when you listen to these songs that use multitrack-recording and close milking when his wife, Mary Ford would sing with him. He used multitracking to make it sound like many guitars were playing in harmony at once, but he played every single part and recorded them individually, and when he put them together, it sounded like their were various guitar players at once. Most of his early songs use this technology, and it is still used today. During the 40s were mainly experimental years for Les, as you can hear in songs like In the Mood, and Nola. He would experiment with his multitracking and guitars he built from wood. Then after he married Mary Ford, he became much bigger and the duet recorded many hit songs from Mockingbird Hill, to How High the Moon, to Vaya Con Dios which all hit in the billboard top 10.
Paul's multitracking and close milking made him well distinguished and many artists began to experiment with this technology so they could get similar results, although not many of them were as good or successful with it as Les Paul. Mary Ford had a really nice voice too, which went in perfect harmony with Paul's smooth jazz guitar. Of course, we also get plenty of guitar solos from Les Paul that doesn't feature Mary Ford like Nola, Lover, and Lady of Spain to name a few. Paul was such a sensation in the early 50s, that he actually was granted his own T.V. show featuring Mary Ford, where he would goof around and play his guitar. An episode is actually present on the final track of this CD. This is really the perfect CD with a wide variety of his songs, as well as his guitar solos and TV show. The book has interviews with the guitar legend himself about his songs. Les Paul didn't play heavy on guitar or use a lot of distortion like those who use his guitar today, but Paul was a very important pioneer in the creation of his own electric guitar that many professions use today. And in terms of professionalism and finger coordination/speed, Les paul was at the top of his class and would blow most famous guitarists out of the water if he updated his sound and played through a distorted amp. He definitely ranks in the top 10 guitarists of all time. Its a shame he had to pass away last year, but he lived a long and very productive life and did best at what he loved, which was improve the music industry with his contributions as well as performed into his 90s.
