Music reviews of Les Miserables 2010 CastMusic Review: This is not les mis, this is some floppy disney musical... Rating: 2 Stars
Well my review here is just based on the singing voices, I did not watch them on stage so I can't judge their physical actual skill. If you love this CD you can just ignore what I said and that's totally fine for you to enjoy, all the thing I said below is just my personal opinion.
There are 3 musicals I personally love the most which are les miserables, secret garden, and rent, due to their storylines that has a lot of richness and depth. To me, les mis is a show that every single character has their own plot to overcome their miseries, which contains a lot of real human emotions and struggling. However, this is not what I heard in this version.
First of all, John Owen Jones does have a nice singing voice and he tries his best to act the role of Valjean out, but it just feels like his tone and interpretation are too young for the role that can't show much about Valjean's maturity and his great kindness character, the lacking shows even more when he sings "bring him home", he sings all the notes beautifully and on spot, but it just does not sound like he is a father that would sacrifice himself for Marius just for the sake of Cosette's happiness. For that song, I love Colm Wilkinson's 10th anniversary version and Anthony Warlow's individual recording of that song the most. Earl Carpenter, also has a nice singing voice, but he just copies Philip Quast too much by lowering his voice while he does not have the same type vocal timbre as PQ, his timbre is actually a bit too high/bright for Javert, in a contrast to PQ's deep and "no mercy" natural timbre. The Confrontation between JOJ and EC does not have any intensity like the 10th anniversary version did at all, not even close. And his suicide basically sounds like yelling And I feel like it would sound way better if he holds the notes for most of the stuff he sings instead of "talk singing". Nevertheless, if the whole cast have their quality I would still rate this CD like 4 stars but this is not the case.
Marius and Cosette just sound plain awful, they may have good singing voices, but only for something like High School Musical or some other Disney shows. Marius maybe young and naive, but he is still a gentleman and that whiny voice just does not show his romance on "A Heart full of Love" at all. His "empty chairs at empty tables" is beyond dreadful, not only is one of the worst I've ever heard, it's SO BAD that I personally think why didn't he just die in the barricade. The Dutch 2008 cast version Marius also has a more feminine type voice, but his ECaET was great and does not sound like some floppy Disney shows at all. Even I can sing that song at least 5 times better than he does; great versions are Michael Ball 10th anniversary, Mario Frangoulis, Carlos Marin, and 2008 dutch cast version. Cosette's interpretation is better than Marius, but still it's too "Disney feel" rather than "pure and elegant" image. There's none of the Cosettes that I actually love a lot, but I think if Hayley Westenra got a chance to sing that role it would fits pretty well.
For Fantine, it's not good as well. "I dreamed a dream" basically is yelling through the whole song, I wanted to turn off my speaker immediately when she started the note. Her belting and "talk singing" just does not flow with the song at all, and her vocal timbre is just not how Fantine would behave if she is a real person. Susan Boyle actually sings that song WAY better even her vocal technique may not be perfect, but at least her timbre sounds like the part, not even mentioning Ruthie Henshall in 10th anniversary version who is the best Fantine I think personally.
BUT, the worst of the worst is hands down - Enjolras. He is not awful, he is SO AWFUL that those I mentioned that are awful are actually "good" comparing to this Enjolras. One thing I always agree is that if the Enjolras is not good, the show is not Les Miserables and this is exactly what happened here! Although Enjolras is a young man in story, he has that calm, natural leadership and the commanding MASCULINE charm that would make everybody follows him no matter what. I actually performed as Enjolras in a local production almost 2 years ago, I don't considered myself as excellent Enjolras but back then I could sing this role AT LEAST 10 times better, now I probably can sing AT LEAST 50 times better than this guy here. The only thing good about this Enjolras is that he can hit the pitch for those high notes but that does not do any justice to this role, Michael Maguire in 10th anniversary can't hit the high notes as good as this guy but he sounds times better than this guy. I wonder how come they can't find a guy who actually SUITS the role for such a big production like this. This Enjolras sounds like an adolescent that his balls were not grown yet, where Enjolras should sound masculine and powerful like somebody who has balls as big as church bells. When I heard him sing "Lamarque is Dead...They will come when we call" I just feel like "good, Lamarque is dead so now you guys just screw yourselves"; his "dawn scene" does not have any "heroic desperation" at all; and the final attack was like "you guys just deserve the death, we are not gonna rise the revolution anyways"; in a contrast to Anthony Warlow sings the final attack I feel like there will be another 100,000 people is going to rise for another revolution, or when Michael Maguire sings "red and black" or "people song" I feel like I would just follow him and sacrifice myself for the revolution if it is necessary for me to do so.
On the good side, the thenardiers including Eponine are pretty good, Eponine can absolutely be even better but still her interpretation does show the "street child" side of the character, but too bad "A little fall of Rain" is not good because of Marius' singing, I just wish he shuts his mouth and I have no idea why Eponine would love such a guy like that. For best "On my Own" I personally would recommend the 1991 Paris Revival Cast French Version. The thenardiers are definitely dirty rats, "Dog Eats Dog" sounds awesome but it's not enough to save the production. Gavroche and little Cosette are great as well, if you're looking for the best "Castle on a Cloud" go for 1991 Paris Revival' that version would just blow your mind off but this version of "Castle on a Cloud" is good too. For Gavroche even he does do good here, I always feel like the musical itself does not do this role justice, if you listen to the original concept album, he actually sings the exact same song he sings all the time in the book and I just LOVE that idea, especially when he sings that song again in his death scene in the original concept album version, that just breaks my heart so bad.
Another good thing about this production is that the orchestration and recording quality is good, but too bad, it's way not enough to save the overall production. If you want to own a les miserables record and can only own one, get the 10th anniversary version, the complete symphonic recording is also awesome but I like the 10th anniversary version even more, where EVERYONE is just superb.
