Music Review: Very good sophomore effort

I bought Spirit earlier this year after falling in love with Bleeding love and Better in Time. I was somewhat dissapointed with the album. I felt she (or her producers) was trying to create a debut exactly like Mariah Carey's; an album full of ballads and a few dance numbers. Leona has a similar voice but I didn't like most of the ballads although I was pleased with the more upbeat numbers.
Now specifically about Echo:
With Echo, Leona really took a good leap. She co-wrote some of the songs, which was a good idea. She seems more comfortable in this album. She can really inject emotion to the songs. Some of the lyrics are a bit silly but Leona does feel them.
The first half of the album is probably the best I've heard in music this year. A lot of this songs are mid or up tempo songs. Each song sounds different than the others but somehow it sounds cohesive throughout. Sure, her vocal abilities aren't showcased to the maximum with these songs but everyone knows she is a gifted singer. We don't need qanyone to remind us that.
The second half of the album (starting with My Hands) is completely different to the first. It's entirely composed by ballads, some of which I consider boring. When I heard Justin Timberlake colaborated on the song "Don't let me down" I was very excited but this song turned out to be very simple and boring.
The last part of the album prevented me for giving it 5 stars, but the first half is good enough for me to recommend this album.
