for steel-string playing and composing.This self-produced jewel soars beyond Guitar Music and A Shout Toward Noon even as it combines their best features. The playful intricacies of rhythm, shadings of texture and volume, and more accessible melodies outdo the benchmark Guitar Music. And, while A Shout Toward Noon is melodically beyond reproach, the tunes on One Guitar,
No Vocals allow the listener to see through the music,
more deeply into Leo's nature, into what a more mature
and confident Leo is willing to reveal of himself.
Leo seems more personally connected to the tunes. He offers them to us as a beaming father might offer his delightful children for inspection and approval. The generous, offbeat liner notes enhance the sense of personal caring about the work, and the unhurried pace and thoughtful sequencing of tunes gives a "live" feel to the performance. The sound is so "here and now" that I felt as if Leo were sitting on the couch in my living room just 10 feet away. With the seamless performance on One Guitar.
No Vocals, Leo has evolved to a new plateau of confidence and control of his instrument. I enjoyed every tune, even the "different" Chamber of Commerce, first called Tribute To Michael. Knowing the brotherly affection Leo and Michael Hedges had for each other, and thinking of their many double bills made this easier to like. My favorites. Well, if I had to choose: Accordion Bells, (possibly Leo's most bee-yootiful tune ever), Bigger Situation, Too Fast, Morning Is The Long Way Home, Snorkel, and Three Quarter North.
More than ever, this album shows why, when Leo's playing,
all the other guitarists pull their chairs up real close.
