Music Review: A few catchy songs - overall unimpressive debut

I have to laugh at the review below or maybe I should cry since I purchased the cd on the strength of it and the sound cuts. Silly me. Anyways, pipes and songs about ancient times do not a Celtic album make. I have no idea where Ms Powers hails from, but she sounds southern to me and the cd was produced in TN. The sound of the music is similiar to late 60's folk and that beloved style of earnest protest songs. The kindest words I can say about her singing is on most of the cuts it is servicable although at times she goes slightly flat and some of the notes are just too high for her unpolished voice. But thats ok because whoever is playing that slide whistle things goes flat too. Some of the songs are really catchy. I particuliarly like the first two cuts and number seven. But there are also some real stinkers. The last song is probably the worst. In no way can this album be compared to Enya. The comparison would hardly be fair to Ms. Powers. Ms Powers does show some potential, but with so many great new age albums out there such as the stunning solo debut of Miriam, it is hard to recommend this one.
Description of Legends of the Goddess
Celtic music is at the heart of Laura Powers' style which also incorporates New Age, Pop and Folk elements. The theme of her current project revolves around the mythology of the Celtic goddess. The production features Irish flute, mandolin, cello and Uileann pipes which provide the background for richly layered vocals. From songs like the mythical "Morrighan's Quest" to "My Avalon" her music captures the heart and soothes the spirit.International CDs
