Amparo, protection or shelter; or a legal proceeding to protect your constitutional rights in a Latin American country. It's hard to imagine how Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin came up with this title, it has little to do with the music on this CD.
I so looked forward to this CD, Lee Ritenour played with some of my favorite musicians, Bob James, and Larry Carlton. His 70/80's version of jazz was much to my liking.
Oh but what a disappointment when this disc got past track 3. Opera, and bad opera at that. Bad movie soundtracks, or forgetable soundtracks. Music that sounded not very well assembled. Mixes that left a lot to be desired. And where is the jazz? Where is the Latin influence? All missing.
It's impossible for me to understand who their audience is - not jazz fans, not folk music, not really classical, not opera.... maybe movie soundtrack lovers?
1. I. Tango en Parque Central - pleasant enough background instrumental music. Has a bit of the movie sountrack sound to it. The orchestra backup is not exactly great. In fact, this would have worked much better with Lee simply playing the guitar and Grusin playing the piano.
2. II. Danzón de Etiqueta - Another pleasant instrumental piece. The piano is much more present and audible. The mix here sounds like everyone was in the studio at one moment and recorded this, not the best.
3. III. Joropo Peligroso - A bit more Brazilian influence, still very pleasant. This mix is much better, bass is well defined, it sounds like recordings were done properly this time. Still nothing earth shattering, or extraordinary here.
4. Pavane, Op. 50 - Oh I am so sorry, this is just about the lowest point in this CD. The singer may well have a beautiful voice, she may well be accomplished, but this is worse than finger nails on the chalk board. Everything is over done, the singing is too intense, the piano and violins build so loudly, the effect is just painful.
5. English Folk Song Suite - Mannheim Steamroller. Yes music fans, Steamroller is back. This is oh so forgetable. Pleasant, at Christmas time.
6. Since First I Saw Your Face Featuring James Taylor, vocal - I actually kind of liked this track. It's interesting to hear James do a song like this one, sort of an Irish folk song or flavor. It reminds me very much of his latest tour music. The mix is truly awful on this one, sadly there is actual clipping in the high end of this CD. Pretty much inexcusable. Maybe I am listening to a pre-release version that will be improved on publication. By the way, this has nothing whatsoever to do with Ritenour or Grusin, they serve as background bit players in this song.
7. Olha Maria (Amparo) Featuring Joshua Bell, violin - Another pleasant track. The violin is very nice, Joshua Bell is amazing. But somehow this just doesn't knit together properly. The other musicians seem to be there to give Bell a venue to play. It also sounds like a movie soundtrack from some random movie. The mix is just adequate.
8. Ma Mère L'Oye (Mother Goose Suite) - Probably one of the better instrumentals on this CD. The guitar and piano work very well with eachother during the first 1:30. But then the orchestra arrives and well things go a bit south. I could have done without the middle section of this piece.
9. Échos - ah lovely Sunday afternoon water music. This sounds like it belongs in a beautiful nature film with bubbling brooks, mountains, animals drinking at a pond.... If that is what you enjoy listening to, well life will be magical with this instrumental piece. Mostly guitar and piano. Nicely mixed this time.
10. Adagio in G Minor Featuring Chris Botti, trumpet - Oh the pain of poorly mixed and mastered music. Botti is so over volume, it is painful listening. Not to mention that I really don't care for this piece of music in the way it was arranged. 5 minutes that would be, maybe 20 seconds in a film.
11. Duetto: Scherzano sul tuo volto Featuring Renée Fleming, soprano and Chris Botti, trumpet - Oh if I wanted opera, I would have purchased an opera CD. I was looking for jazz, maybe at the limit pleasant movie sound tracks. But not OPERA!!! Please, leave that to the professionals. Lee and Dave, you just don't belong in this arena. I'm reminded of Castafiore from the Tin Tin series and what Captain Haddock would say, "blistering blue barnacles."
All in all, not a very good CD.
