Music Review: Very Impressive Debut...

I found out about this album thanks in part to the recommendations that Amazon gives me, and also in part that I saw this album listed on the Josh Groban "Closer" page on Amazon. This violinist is definately a virtuoso and is only equaled in her age range by Joshua Bell.
"Music From a Farther Room" is a beautiful mix of songs from classical lore to modern day music. The way Ms. Micarelli makes her violin sing is exquisite and very enchanting. The album begins with "Samarkand" which is a good song but I think that her playing is overshadowed by too much production of other sounds in this song. "Oblivion" is one of the most emotional pieces on the entire album with the melancholy piano tones and the obvious "sadness" that the violin sings. "Meditation from 'Thais'" and "Ravel String Quartet in F Major" are re-makes of famous classical violin pieces that truly need no introduction. "Portrait" is perhaps the one song on the album that Micarelli shows her versatility on the violin against the backdrop of the orchestra...very moving and beautiful. "To Love You More" is done remarkably and in my opinion, Micarelli does it better than the original recording. "Reflexio" is a great song but not the strongest one on the album. As yes, lovely "Aurora" definately paints the picture of Sleeping Beauty if it were done to music and summarized. "Lady Grinning Soul" is a beautiful weaving of piano and violin while "She Is Like the Swallow" seems to really break the spirit of this album by adding vocals. "My Funny Valentine" is one of my all-time favorite songs ever and Micarelli does it justice that even Ella Fitzgerald would salute. "Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody" is a great way to end off this album because it unites the older classical music (i.e. "Nocturne") with modern day music that is a classic in its own right.
Overall, this debut is astounishing and the only thing that keeps it from being magnificient and worthy of 5 stars is the fact that some of the songs could have been done better or left off ("Samarkand", "She Is Like the Swallow"). I'll also reserve the 5 stars since I'm quite sure her next album will surpass this one. For anyone who likes violin, this is a must for your collection along with Joshua Bell's "Romance of the Violin."

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla?s "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson
