Music reviews of I Hope You Dance

Music Review: Great stuff from a great singer
Rating: 4 Stars

Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" has taken a lot of knocks for not being as purely country as her first albums, but here's an idea--let's do what Charlie Parker did when someone named his music bee bop. He responded, "Can't we just call it music?" If you just call it music, this is a wonderful album. If you want to call it pure, unadulterated country music (which itself is a totally fluid category, encompassing everything from mountain music to bluegrass to rockabilly), you may be disappointed.

Taking things from the "let's just call it music" perspective, this is one terrific album. There are a couple of real stand-outs here. Womack has a lovely, strong voice, and while I think she sounds best on her own, she has the additional back-up here of Ricky Skaggs, Dan Tyminski, Sons of the Desert, and others.

"I Hope You Dance" was justly praised when it first came out as a song rife with hope and wonder--some folks don't like the brief Sons of the Desert backing vocals section, but I love it for the rhythmic grounding it gives as Lee Ann soars into the stratosphere over them. It's a beautiful counterpoint. On "Why They Call It Falling"--probably my favorite song on the album--Womack wonders why anyone calls the process of love "falling" and by the end of the song she knows. This Roxie Dean and Dan Schultz song deftly, heartbreakingly sketches a love affair from beginning to end. Rarely has any song captured more poignantly, or more effectively, the arc of love. "Ashes by Now" is another terrific song, with Womack soounding righteously angry at her lover because "as much as you burn me, baby/I should be ashes by now."

Labeling it ahead of time doesn't give you a chance to exercise your sense of wonder and an open mind. Give the album a listen without prejudice and you just may find that the music here is just that--music, and gorgeous music at that.

Description of I Hope You Dance

CMA winning album from the country music stars 2001 album. Includes the bonus track 'I Hope You Dance' (Brian Rawlings Mix). Billboard calls it 'the finest country album post Shania Twain'.
Lee Ann Womack may well have the most hard-country female voice in Nashville; while her first two albums showed much promise, they didn't boost her past the middle of the pack. So what's the Nashville solution? Instead of playing to her strengths, make her soprano sound smaller and more compact (think Dolly, not Tammy), de-twang it so she sounds more creamy and dreamy. In other words, try to make her sound more like everyone else. Most of these songs are slow or midtempo, building ever so predictably, and with arrangements paying little more than lip service to roots. Womack sounds better with less accompaniment ("I Know Why the River Runs," "Thinkin' with My Heart Again") and best when her drawl prevails ("Does My Ring Burn Your Finger"). And she sounds unbeatable when she's totally involved, as on the best song, "I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something." And who cowrote that? Why, Lee Ann did. It's the only such song here, but somebody should take a hint. --John Morthland
