Music reviews of Rehab

Music Review: Perhaps the best album of 2010
Rating: 5 Stars

I was self-introduced to Lecrae about a year ago and have been and avid fan ever since. I must say that this was by far the most anticipated Christian rap album this year. I think 2010 was a great year for Christian music, with Tonight by tobyMac in February, in the summer we had Between Two Worlds and Lions and Liars by Trip Lee and Sho Baraka, respectively. Then we had Redemption by PRo and now Rehab by Lecrae. Some more somewhat superfluous items that are skippable if you're already a fan of Lecrae. Lecrae is a member of the 116 Clique which is under Reach Records, along with Sho Baraka, Trip Lee, Tedashii, and DJ Official. When the Clique was first founded, it included various artists, like This'l, J-son, Flame, 1-Lyfe, Dillon Chase, Shai Linne, as well as the previously mentioned artists. Some of these guys went on to have successful careers, like Flame, This'l, and Shai Linne, with other record companies. The others, however, sort of dropped into oblivion. Anyway, on to the album review. First some general thought on the album as whole. I would say that it is not as good as any of Lecrae's previous drops, but they were all really good, so it's not really saying much that it's not as good as those. Lecrae features other artists on nearly every song. That's something that is good in some ways and bad in others. For example, it's great that he feated KB (a brand-new Reach Records artist) on a song. It's not so great that Creezie does all of 2 choruses on this album because of all the feats. So here's a song-by-song review:

Check In: 6/10. Lecrae's album openers have gotten progressively less... good (words fail me). On his first drop, Real Talk, he opened with a great, upbeat,
"swag" type song Souled Out. On his soph release, he opened with a little less great song After The Music Stops. Then on Rebel, the album prior to this one on his discography, opened with Rebel Intro which was about equal to ATMS. Then you have Check In. In my words, somewhat of a fail. Lyrics are good as always.

Killa: 7/10 This songs tune and beat are good. It is about sin, with sin in the chorus taking the form of an enticing prostitute luring the fool as in Proverbs 7 into her lair. Lecrae is advocating turning away from sin as it is a "killa" and talks about his own struggles.

Divine Intervention ft. J.R.: 6/10 I really liked J.R. on some previous albums from Lecrae and Tedashii, but he kind of disappoints on this one The beat and tune is good, and the lyrics are about letting God take over in your life.

Just Like You ft. J. Paul: 8/10 This was one of the pre-album singles for Rehab. It's slower, but still really enjoyable for it's relaxing qualities ' The first two verses talk about Lecrae's near-idolism of his uncle, who was essentially his dad and how he wanted to be just like him (hence the title). The last verse talks about translating that to God and wanting to be like God.

Gotta Know ft. Benjah 9/10 This is where the album starts to pick up speed. Benjah does a great job on the chorus. The lyrics are about showing people Christ through your actions.

Used To Do It Too ft. KB 10/10 This song is really good! It features KB a brand-new Reach artist, who is phenomenal. I can't wait for him to release and album. The song is about how, no matter what you've done, God can still forgive. Great tune and beat.

Children Of The Light ft. Sonny Sandoval and Dillavou 7/10 Good use of guitars on this one. The song is about being, well, "children of the light". This was another pre-album single.

High ft. Suzy Rock and Sho Baraka 9/10: I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that Suzy Rock kind of ruins a good song on this one. She does have a very annoying voice that will get on your nerves. Sho does a great job. About being above reproach in your Christian walk. This was the 3rd single

New Shalom ft. PRo 10/10 This song is absolutely fantastic! Trip Lee featured Lecrae and PRo together on his album on the song Twisted, and PRo featured Lecrae on his album. This song is inspired by the first phrase in the PRo song Hold Me Down. The beat and tune are great, with a chopped and screwed chorus.

40 Deep ft. Tedashii and Trip Lee 10/10 Amazing song about not being ashamed of Jesus. This is one of only two songs to feature three of the best rappers in the business. A great beat and tune make this one the best song on the album.

Walk On Water 8/10 This one is really good as well. About how with God you can do anything. The tune is cool and the beat as well. Just as a sidenote, be prepared to head to the bathroom at the end of this song '

God Is Enough ft. Flame and Jai 10/10 This one is in a tie for the best song on the album. A great electronic intro with the first verse done excellently by Flame. The chorus is amazingly done by Jai, who isn't completely hiding behind an autotune on this one like the other reviewer said. Jai really makes this song worth listening to.

Boasting ft. Anthony Evans 8/10 A great song, but slower. About boasting in Jesus, and not in yourself. A great tune and beat.

Background ft. C-Lite 9/10 A slower song, but still one of the best on the album. About playing the background in God's movie and letting Him take the lead. There is an official music video for this song.

New Reality ft. Chinua Hawk 7/10 Not exactly a great song, Chinua Hawk can ruin a song easily. Lyrics are about a new reality of having Jesus in your life. Piano-style tune, with an O.K. beat.

Release Date ft. Chris Lee 8/10 I really liked Chris Lee on Trip Lee's album earlier this year, and he doesn't disappoint on this one. About Jesus coming back. Great electronic/piano tune, but the beat leaves a little to be desired.

I Love You ft. Chris Lee 9/10 A tribute to Crae's wife, this one is a great closer. I love the beat, and the tune is great. Chris Lee is great. The lyrics are similar to Sho Baraka's We Can Be More. Let me just say this, if your wife is mad at you or is feeling like you're taking her for granted, have her listen to this song and tell her that's exactly what you think.

Overall, this album doesn't disappoint in the lyrics department, but the music itself leaves something to be desired. However, the discerning listener will find plenty of musical enjoyment. And parents, if you're worried that secular rap is having a bad influence on your children, which it is, but they think that Christian rap is cheesy, prove them wrong and buy them this album or any other album from Reach Records. You can't go wrong with them!
