Music Review: More of an Edge

Italian singer Laura Pausini gained her reputation in the 1990s singing adult contemporary music. When her attempted English crossover in 2002 failed, many wondered how her next Italian album would fare. Rather than continuing with the type of music that had made her famous, she took a slightly different turn with 2004's "Resta in Ascolto". The record has more rock, more emotion, and more of an edge than we've ever heard from her before. And it works.
It's immediately apparent that this album is quite a change from the ballads Pausini is known for. Rather than singing about great love, this record is all about the painful aspect of relationships. It explodes with lead track 'La Prospettiva di Me', where Laura loudly announces, "Oggi tu sei per me/Polvere/Ferma nei corridoi/.../Non sei più che un dettaglio ormai" ("Today you are for me/Dust/Collecting in the hallway/.../You are no more than a detail now"). Whatever breakup she went through, it provided plenty of creative fodder for this album, with equally painful rock songs like title track 'Resta in Ascolto' and my personal favorite, 'Come Se Non Fosse Stato Mai Amore' ('As if It Had Never Been Love').
However, the entire album is not as hard as these three tracks. 'Vivimi' is a gentle ballad reminiscent of her earlier work, while 'Il Tuo Nome in Maiuscolo' speaks of love found when least expected. On an album that oozes attitude, it's a refreshingly gentle reminder of the better things in life. And, while several people have criticized 'Mi Abbandono A Te' for its few English lines, I think they add to, rather than detract, from the mood of the song.
One of the things I love about Laura Pausini is the emotion that comes through in her voice. The first time I heard it, my understanding of the Italian language was limited at best, yet I could understand the emotion she was conveying simply by the tone of her voice. There's a reason this one earned her a Grammy Award - it's simply outstanding. She has made "Resta in Ascolto" an album anyone can enjoy, Italian or not. And that takes talent.
