Music Review: Still failing to give a top-class overview for the beginner

"Time And Love - The Essential Masters" was released in 2000 as a low-priced overview of the peak years of seminal singer/songwriter Laura Nyro. As opposed to the hand-picked (by Nyro herself) Stoned Soul Picnic, it contains no material later than her last Billboard Top 100 entry with Smile.
Though this is helpful for the beginner given that her later albums lacked the sheer wonderment of her best work from around 1970, like the earlier "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Time And Love - The Essential Masters" still suffers badly from overfocusing on hits for such artists as the Fifth Dimension and Barbara Streisand (who appealed to totally different audiences from Nyro herself). Whilst Nyro's own renditions of these songs were impressive (especially "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Eli's Coming") Nyro's primary legacy and great influence does not rest with these renditions.
Rather, it is found on her two brilliant masterpieces, the raucous, hooky (and fairly successful commercially) New York Tendaberry and the soft, subtle and challenging Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat (which should be heard by 4AD connoisseurs especially "Upstairs By A Chinese Lamp"). Another legacy of her's is the development of the covers album with the brilliant, impressionistic Gonna Take A Miracle.
However, much from these masterpieces is omitted here, with such key songs as "Captain For Dark Mornings", "Tom Cat Goodbye", "Mercy On Broadway", "Gibsom Street", "Brown Earth", "Map To The Treasure", "Monkey Time/Dancing In The Street", "Jimmy Mack" and "Nowhere To Run" not found. Not to mention the essential "Beads Of Sweat", with a lyric so shocking that it shows just how shallow most punksters and rappers really are. "Money" and the proto-sadcore "I Am The Blues" from Smile show the same thing even today. The only cuts from "New York Tendaberry" are her last songs to be hits for others, and her uneven debut dominates the first half of the album.
Nonetheless, with the inclusion of the brilliant "Blackpatch", "Lu" and Nyro's renditions of "Save The Country" and "Time And Love" (a brilliant reference to the liberation of women), the album cannot be considered anything but impressive in terms of actual content. It is merely that the focus of Sony is on the wrong aspect of the career of a seriously misunderstood woman who was unrivalled for sheer talent.
This abundance of talent makes Laura Nyro as relevant as ever in a day of talentless teen pop and unmusicianly punk and rap groups that are incessantly praised by critics at the expense of genuinely talented musicians. Certainly, someone who really does understand the impact of Laura Nyro's seminal work (especially Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat) since the middle 1980s would be very handy for Sony.
