Music Review: Laura Deserves A Better Tribute...

As a longtime fan of Laura Branigan I was deeply disappointed by this cd. The good news is her voice is wonderful on these recordings. The bad news is it is crowded out by overproduction and poor mixing. The one exception to this is the fifth track, "I Know You By Heart". This is a lovely ballad and Laura's vocal is both heartfelt and endearing. The arrangement and production complement her vocal very well. But one has only to listen to the first vocal line of this track and then select any other track on the cd to hear the production problems with the rest of the recordings. The vocals begin too quietly and are then bombarded by overproduction. It's not that Laura is singing too softly, her vocals are excellent. It's that the engineers and producers on each of the other tracks seem to pay more attention to the instruments than her vocals. They seem to care nothing for the breadth of the stereo pan. Synthesized strings squelch everything in their path because they are too loud and poorly placed in the mix. And this is not to say that there is a problem with using syntheziers. Laura's career was at its height in the age of synth-pop and her discography reflects that. But the purpose of this cd is to recognize the final recordings of a talented and beloved singer. Instead it becomes a struggle to even understand the lyrics in some places. "The Winner Takes It All" starts well enough, only to become a distorted clamoring of synthesizer, bass and drums that almost completely obliterate the vocal. You would have to be strung out on ecstasy to enjoy this track. It's difficult to critique "The Challenge", as Laura produced this track herself. I do not know what her actual participation was in doing so, as "producer" is a pretty flexible term in the recording industry. But the reality is that her vocal is difficult to hear in many spots. I would love to see the owners of the source tapes hand them over to a competent production team for remixing. Laura Branigan deserves better than this. She was an amazing singer who has left a distinguished legacy of beautiful music. Personally, I would prefer to see these songs added to that legacy in a more meaningful way.
