Music Review: I despise Rancid but like this CD

First of all, I have to admit that I have not listened to the whole albume yet although I have listened to most of the songs on it. I am mainly writing this because I felt compelled to after the review some idiot gave it dismissing it simply as cliche. Yes, this CD is cliche, perhaps even more so than Rancid, but if you are not an innovator like Mike Muir, Johnny Thunders, or the Vandals, (let's face it, for the past 20 years, punk has been more about attitude than innovation)then stick with the cliche if it's fun and makes people want to jump in the pit. I first reluctantly heard the Bastards at Warped because I was with a friend who liked Rancid. I had unfortunately caught Rancid twice before at Warped and left the area within minutes because they sucked. The Bastards, on the other hand, caught me by surprise. It was a sound that I hadn't heard since raiding an old f%&k buddy's Anti-Nowhere League collection. First of all, I don't think they sound like Rancid except for the fact that they play 3-chord songs, but the same could be said about anyone from Nirvana to Puffy AmiYumi. Actually, the Bastards both looked and sounded like the League. I must have not been far off on my comparison because on the following album the Bastards covered an ANL song in a version that would be indistinguishable from the original if not for the better sound quality. I also saw Anti-Flag and Flogging Molly at the same show, and yes both those bands were even better than the Bastards but never the less, the Bastards were still entertaining and made me get some bruises in the pit. As far as cliches go, the aforementioned idiot listed Anti-Flag and Unseen as non-cliche bands. If Unseen aren't paint by numbers punk rock, then what is? From mohawks and all black outfits w/ red ties to 3-chord angst and breakneck backbeat drumming, Unseen have an old formula pretty well covered. They're not doing anything the Exploited or the Casualties haven't already done, in fact Unseen do it just as well and sometimes even better. Anti-Flag takes several cues from their predecessors as well. This does not mean they are bad, it just means that yes they fit the street punk cliche, just like the Bastards fit a cliche. To sum it up, if you get this CD, you will be entertained, you will not be shocked, you will not be enlightened, you will not discover anything new, but if you like punk and can get over the fact that one of the members also plays in a cheesey pop rock band, you will have a lot of fun listening to it.
On a final note, someone compared them to Skrewdriver, unlike them the skins in the Bastards are not Nazis to my knowledge. They are actually friendly guys who were quite nice to my friend and me who are both of color.
