Music Review: Excellent Moods

Ever since I saw the AT&T commercial that featured portions of the song, "Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop", I wondered who the artist was so I could get more of that music. I'm nearly 58 now, so I stopped listening to commercial radio at least 20 years ago. It is full of content that has been selected by the corporate music industry. There are so many formulas and enhancements to the sound that it ends up being analogous to living on a diet or pre-packaged, frozen food.
Then, one day a young friend was sharing You Tube videos of what he called "Indie" artists. I had head the term "Indie" but I thought it referred to the music and film industry from India which are known to have a large following in that part of the world. I asked why none of the groups, all of which had content that I did find interesting were from India since they were called "Indie". He laughed and said the term referred to independent artists from small recording companies who were not bound by large corporate constraints and policies.
Then, he passed on to me the video of Landon Pigg and his group performing "Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop. I was thrilled! I said I had long been wondering where that music from the AT&T commercial had come from. The video and the entire ensemble were very intriguing. I note especially the use of an old upright piano, a cello and unusual percussion. The rhythm is also engaging: duplets over an underlying triplet pattern.
As a lifelong piano technician (which may explain why I am so very selective about the music I choose to embrace), I noted that this particular song had the one and only example of single octave exposure in the midrange of any music from the 17th Century to the present. It is the first melodic line heard, played by the guitar and later joined by the piano. There are plenty of examples of single octave exposure both low and high but none that I have ever heard in the midrange as is so artfully done in this particular composition.
It is obvious that Landon Pigg is also a poet. I consider that important when I take note of a singer and songwriter. I'm afraid that the commercial music industry does not and does not offer such content over broadcast radio.
I seached the name Landon Pigg on Amazon and bought two copies of "The Boy Who Never", one for myself and one to give to a friend. I found the moods to be excellent and with variety but the overall experience is relaxing and calming.

Produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits), the record includes a new arrangement of Pigg's fantastic single 'Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop.' Since the release of his debut album in 2006, this unique and enigmatic artist has had an incredibly productive and creative period. Landon concentrated on writing new material for The Boy Who Never, writing over 20 new songs during sessions in Nashville, New York and Los Angeles.
