Music reviews of Sacrament

Music Review: Head and Shoulders Above Their Past !!!!( Really 4.8/5 for the lyrics)
Rating: 5 Stars

Lamb of god has been around for almost 6, or if you count Burn the Priest as their first album, 8 years, and have since come a long way. In my opinion their first as log and second in discography album "New American Gospel" was good, but had come out in 2000, when arguably, the heavy metal mainstream was dead, or at least in a coma. Pantera was about to break up, after the fantastic (in my opinion their best) "Reinventing the Steel", Metallica was already a disgrace, Anthrax was showing signs of crossover ambition, Slayer was doing well, but nobody seemed to care, Megadeth (my favorite band) would soon disband after commercially flopping "Risk", and metalcore was still in its crib, playing with the pacifier. Metal as a genre seemed doomed to eternal sleep and oblivion. The "New American Gospel" garnered very positive reviews mainly, because the band showed that they refused to surrender to the masses, and indeed, the album relied more on aggression and power than skill or technicality, with barely audible melody in between the riffs. Instead, a huge, impenetrable wall of sound pummeled the listener with relentless fury. Lamb of god's status as "saviors of metal" was ensured with their next offering, the phenomenal "As the Palaces Burn", after which many metal guitarist hailed log as the next giant of heavy music, some members of Slayer would even call them "the new Slayer". The second opus from Virginians contained much more sophisticated, tighter, and more technical music. Signs of maturity and hard work emphasized by more melody, and far superior songwriting created a massive expectation for their next album. Again, lamb of god did not disappoint, as "Ashes of the Wake" became another classic in heavy metal history. Although metalcore (or as I prefer metallic hardcore) was in its prime with bands like God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and a rising star Trivium, log seemed to focus more on brutality and technical prowess than accessibility. By many magazines proclaimed the album of the 2004, "Ashes..." became a standard by which all future log offerings will have been measured. That is precisely the reason why their latest CD elicits so many extreme ratings: people either hate it or love it, with only a few in-between. I have to be honest, my appetites were huge after "AOTW", and at first, neither "Redneck" nor "Walk With Me In Hell" did anything for me. Lamb of god changed, and I didn't like it. They did not sell out, nor did they become more accessible, they have simply matured. At some point, they have decided that unlike Slayer, they wouldn't be contended with making the same album over and over again. Maybe that is why some of you dislike the new All That Remains, or even the last Trivium, because you want the same stuff you're used to hearing. Well, thankfully some bands, like log and ATR believe in progress and creativity, and once I realized that "Sacrament", though in every note a lamb of god's album is really TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
In fact, the only way I was able to appreciate this outstanding masterpiece is by actually FORGETTING who recorded it. "Sacrament" was created by the same band, but different, more experienced and much more skillful musicians. In many interviews, the members of lamb of god confess to pushing themselves to and past their limits of creativity, technical skill, songwriting ability, and musical bounds, and it more than shows on this record! It is clearly their best offering (though not most accessible like "Ashes..."), but you will agree only after a sixth or seventh spin, because all the good stuff is hidden and deep. If and when you give it a chance, you will hear influences from the biggest in metal history: Pantera, Slayer, early Megadeth, early Metallica, Testament, as well as Death, and classic Floridian death metal. But the biggest change is songwriting: no longer one-dimensional, music of the "Sacrament" is like a heavy metal rollercoaster, having more in common with classic thrash and death and black metal, than currently popular metalcore. I would not even call log metalcore, at all, anymore. Lamb of god are now in a league by themselves, just like Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, or Slayer. With the exception of maybe "Redneck" (which may or not be an intentional tribute to Dimebag and Pantera) every song sounds fresh and offers something new from the other, and each new spin brings dimensions presently unknown. There is also greater emphasis on melody, but think "Rust in Peace" rather than "Countdown to Extinction" in terms of harmony and technical proficiency. Some may not like the vocals, but Blythe never claimed to sing like Hetfield, Anselmo, or even Mustaine, and with that approach in mind, he's definitely made progress. Others will find darker, meaner, more personal lyrics disturbing, and here I would have to agree. The only low point of this album ARE lyrics, which are not as good and cunning as on their previous offering. Consequently, I find it hard to relate to them, let alone be inspired by them. That is however a minor setback, and that is why I have only taken off 0.2 star for that, but since I rate it 4.8, and you can only give whole stars, I gave "Sacrament" 5...After all, despite their name, log is not a Christian band, if you want that, listen to War of Ages, or The Showdown (great stuff in its own right). As for "Sacrament", only one album this year gave me EXACTLY the same chills: Enforsaken "Sinner's Intuition" (highly recommended along with "Forever Endeavor"). Many have argued that metalcore has run its course, and its time for a new direction for metal. If so, then lamb of god is all too ready to lead the pack. Overall, great progress, and if they work slightly more on the lyrics, I will give them a full 5 star rating next time.

Description of Sacrament

Limited Edition two disc (CD+ PAL/Region 0 DVD) pressing of the 2006 album my Metal maestros Lamb Of God. Already deleted in the U.S., the DVD contains the same bonus material found on the domestic version including a documentary music videos and more. Sony/BMG.
Contemporary metal doesn't get much better or blistering than Lamb of God, something the quintet proves track-by-track on this latest offering. Armed with a bevy of furious riffs and perhaps even more furious vocals, the group tears through tracks such as "Walk with Me in Hell" and "Foot to the Throat" with a ferocity too-little-heard among the sea of bands that the group has inspired in its still-young career. Detractors will be tempted to fault the band for its lack of subtlety, but they're clearly missing the point. There are but a handful of young heavy bands worthy of carrying the proud torch of metal in this decade, and Lamb of God--along with The Esoteric and Totimoshi--is one of them. Just take a listen to "Again We Rise," "Requiem," or "Pathetic" and see if you don't agree. --Jedd Beaudoin
