Music Review: The Remix (U.S. Edition) [REVIEW]

To some, 'The Remix' is a terrific buy and find: collection of 10 remixes spanning Lady GaGa's first two releases: The Fame and The Fame Monster. Basically, there's a remix from every single she's released thus far with a few extras tossed in. Yet, to me, these 10 remixes are definitely not the best Lady GaGa has to offer, even in terms of remixes. What strikes me as odd about the U.S. edition and release of 'The Remix' is that compared to the international releases, it's severely skimpy and stripped down. For example, the U.K. release of the album has 17 tracks and yet again the release in the U.S. market is far less. What we have is a collection of so-so remixes: there's one or two really good ones but mostly a lot of mediocrity. To top it off, there's really nothing new with this product: fans will come to realize that many of these remixes have been released on the past singles/remix collections that have accompanied each single thus far. They've been around for a while thanks to physical releases, iTunes, other digital stores like Amazon and of course are all over the Internet due to the fact that 'The Remix' album has actually been around for months due to international releases. Is there anything really new on this release? Not really, and that's a bit disappointing overall.
The Good: First, I'm glad to see 'The Remix' got a U.S. release (period) considering it's been long overdue. The best part of the release is that it's a nice, frivolous reminder of the hits that have helped Lady GaGa become a household name and staple of the music industry. The tracks seem to be in chronological order of the single's release, and all of the big hits are represented in some way. A few of the mixes, including "Alejandro (Sound of Arrows Mix)" and "Poker Face (LLG Vs GlG Radio Mix Remix)" feel like true "remixes" - they take the vocals and uproot the familiar beat and music to give the track and vibe of the song and entirely new outlook and feel.
The Bad: The album is pulled down by the fact that the remixes chosen for this release really aren't the best. A lot of them, if listened to in one setting, sound really similar and boring: they disregard the vocals and lyrics in favor of inserting a new instrumental track meant to make the song sound club and dance worthy. To me, that doesn't make a great remix. The LoveGame remix featuring Marilyn Manson sounds gimmicky and lame with his vocals breaking up the song and the ill attempt to turn the pop song into a mosh-pit rock hit; the Starsmith mix of "Bad Romance" just takes out all the elements that made the original fun and unique in favor of new instrumentation that doesn't really go with the vibe and lyrics of the track; the Monarchy `Stylites' Remix of "Dance in the Dark" overall lacks any emotion and makes the track feel boring. My issue with 'The Remix' is that in its international releases, other remixes that added more variety and flavor to the overall album were included and made it feel worth of listening to and buying. The U.S. release, however, features some of the most common, dull remixes from GaGa. There were tons of better remixes of some of these tracks available and it seems hard to believe that these were truly the best.
My suggestion: get your hands on the Japanese or U.K. version of The Remix (IMPORT) - they both offer more tracks, more variety and better remixes. This U.S. version is very average and doesn't do all of the remixes done for GaGa any justice - it's definitely not a representation of the best of the remixes from her career thus far, which should have been the focus and intention of the album. If you're a big fan of Lady GaGa, you probably already have most of these remixes in your possession and other than buying this for your collecting purposes, it's not really worth purchasing. If you're a casual GaGa fan and are into dance music, then get this - it's a nice alternative/remixed intro to Lady GaGa.
