Music Reviews of The Fame

Music Review: Too much filler and nothing matches "Just Dance"
Rating: 3 Stars

I think everyone who watched the Miss World Pageant was hooked on the song "Just Dance" performed by Lady Gaga. It was a flashback to Ricky Martin breaking onto the scene with "Cup of Life(ole ole ole)" on an award show many years ago. Here's a question for you? Where is Ricky now? I dunno but Lady G. may soon find out as nothing on The Fame comes close to topping "Just Dance".

Of the 14 songs I'd say 8 are listenable. Just Dance is the highlight with Lovegame, Poker Face, Starstruck being worthy second singles. The last four songs of the album, which are all mediocre, saved this reviewer from giving the album 2 stars or maybe even less.

This album is cheap. $8 on amazon. If you feel like shelling out a dollar for 4 good tracks and 4 mediocre ones, the other 6 are just waste of space and sound, then by all means pick this album up. If you want better dance/party music from a real diva who has legs...I'd suggest picking up Kylie Minogue's latest effort, X. Lady G. should take a cue from her and not Ricky Martin if she wants to stay around in this game for longer or else her fame will be a blip known as the Just Dance which was on a disc with a lot of so-so tracks, "The Fame".

Music Review: Best New Artist
Rating: 5 Stars

After being a writer for other artists, gaga decided to record an album of her own and it is probably one of the best i have heard (as far as dance pop goes) in years. Her voice is somewhat like Christina Aguilera's and Gwen Stefani's combined. Most importantly, all of the songs on this album are incredibly catchy and have AMAZING hooks as well as wonderful production. Sadly some of her best songs were left off of this record, all of which can be found on youtube ;), such as "rock show","again again", "wonderful", "disco heaven, and "dirty ice cream". Getting back to the record, all of the up tempo songs are AMAZING (just dance; poker face; love game; beautiful, dirty ,rich; etc. ) and the ballads are VERY GOOD too, especially "Brown Eyes" which is mind blowingly amazing. It is hard to think of a track that does not impress me. For a newcomer, gaga has put out a very good first album and i hope to hear more from her in the next few years. I would venture to say that she may be a contender for best new artist at the grammys, or at least the MTV music awards. If you like popular music , with catchy beats and clever lyrics, and artists such as prince, madonna, britney spears, and david bowie this is a MUST HAVE record.

Music Review: Why do I love this CD so much?
Rating: 5 Stars

I mean, some of the subjects of her songs are just plain out stupid such as "Just Dance", a song about a girl who is so drunk that she's lost her keys & doesn't know why her shirt is inside out. I wouldn't normally find a song about a slobbering drunk entertaining & fun to listen to, but it is.

Then again, Lady Gaga's not the first singer I've listened to & loved despite not agreeing with all of the subject matter. (Some of William Control's songs are actually pretty bad as well.) I just can't quite put my finger on why, but I keep moving & humming along with the songs. (Some of them I'll admit, I sing out loud- badly.) My personal favorite has to be "Paper Gangsta", a song about people who act like wanna be ganstas.

If you like people such as Madonna, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, you'll probably love Lady Gaga. If you don't like those types of singers then the odds are that you'll despise this CD with a vengeance. (Or if you just dislike CDs that are obviously marketed & written to sell to the biggest common denominator, which this CD is. Heavy thinking isn't a part of this CD.) Either way, I'll be looking forward to Lady Gaga's next CD with great interest.

Music Review: Leave Your Brains at the Door
Rating: 3 Stars

Lady Gaga may not be the best musician around, and chances are this is the kind of album that the world will collectively forget in about a year or so, but still, "The Fame" does have its moments. Made for fans of absolutely meaningless dance-pop music, this is the kind of album that is meant to win over fans of Kylie Minogue and Rachel Stevens.

Granted this isn't exactly my bag, but the album sounds good halfway through, and then quickly loses steam. Lead single "Just Dance" is no competition for Track 2 "Lovebug", but thats a minor quibble in an album that so frantically wants to proclaim its addictiveness. For the record, I found the production a little too techno and screechy, and had to listen to it in about three sittings before I could finish the whole thing.

So is the hype justified? No, not really. This isn't really comparable to even the more average Dannii Minogue records, and its a pity that Lady Gaga saves her best stuff for other peoples' albums (check out her "Big Girl Now" on New Kids on the Blocks' new CD). But since shes having her 15 minutes, we may as well cut her some slack and let her enjoy it.

Three Stars. Pretty much just average.

Music Review: It's got a beat, you can dance to it
Rating: 2 Stars

When I first saw a Lady Gaga video, I thought, "seen it - Madonna." Well, against my kids advice I gave the CD a whirl, and was mildly impressed. Lady Gaga herself admits that her work is derivative of the work of earlier artists, and her constant rehash of the wardrobes of other, earlier musicians and actors certainly reinforces the point.

She is another in a long-line of studio creations - she has a good body, which she is willing to show off at the drop of a hat, which makes for a lot of views for her videos. Her voice is pleasing, but is electroniced to the point where it is not entirely recognizable. I dare say that if you electroniced my voice like that I could sound quite pleasing as well. (Though no one would ever want to watch me dance!)

No, it's not a bad album, as a matter of fact, it's a triumph of studio electronics and mixing and modifying techniques. Does she have any actual talent? Well, we'll see when the acoustical album comes out. Until then, I remain dubious. Nonetheless, it's got a beat, and you CAN dance to it.
