Music reviews of The Fame Monster [Deluxe Edition]

Music Review: The more `Gaga' the merrier...
Rating: 4 Stars

I've already reviewed `The Fame' and `Monster' and so I've decided to just kind of copy and paste to review `The Fame (Monster)'. So, in parts, this is what I've had to say about the music la'Gaga has provided for us on this 2-Disc epic.

Ha, like that?

I started by labeling Gaga as pointless entertainment when I reviewed `The Fame'.

"If you like to swallow spoonfuls of self-indulgent, shallow, materialistic banter then Lady Gaga's debut album `The Fame' is going to be right up your ally. That isn't meant to be a diss by any means, but it is only realistic to call out Gaga's collection of meaningless tracks for what they really are. There is no weight here whatsoever, but that is not the point. In interviews she's been very clear that she doesn't care that her songs are pointless. All she cares about is that they are fun."

I still agree with this, for the most part. Some of her music (like `Speechless' and `Paparazzi') has real depth, but for the most part she is trashy pop fun, and she indulges in that fact (and you should too).

"The four singles she released off (`THE FAME') album are pretty representative of who Gaga is as an artist. `Just Dance', the first single, is an infectious club track that makes mention of Gaga's love for liquor, boys and music. `Poker Face' is laced with innuendo and capitalizes on slick beats and catchy lyrics. While both of those tracks grow old over time, `LoveGame' and `Paparazzi' happen to stand tall as stellar pop tracks. `Paparazzi' especially uses a darkly suggestive stalker story to express love in a wildly inventive way. It may be the best track on the album. `LoveGame' opens brilliantly (that beat IS sick) and continues with ferocity."

I continued speaking about her radio singles when reviewing `Monster':

"So, we've all heard `Bad Romance' and `Telephone' by now, and that's a good thing since both tracks are great. `Bad Romance' is a tad overplayed, and it never really sat with me as pristine Gaga (I still prefer tracks like `LoveGame' or `Poker Face') but `Telephone' was the big `WOW' moment for me. I loathed that trashy `Video Phone' song that Beyonce put on her `Sasha Fierce' album and so I was really afraid that this would wind up being a similar disappointment, but it is so much fun and such a guilty pleasure."

I think, with both `The Fame' and `Monster', she has shown inconsistencies. She is consistently entertaining and interesting, but she hasn't perfected her game yet. If she had compiled these albums from the very beginning and trimmed out the fat it would have easily been one of the best debuts of the decade.

On that note:

"The rest of (`THE FAME') is a little all over the place, from great to good to mediocre. Songs like `The Fame' is cringe worthy in their poor quality, and `Eh, Eh' is just boring. It was nice to see a different side to Gaga, but it was constructed horrifically. `I Like It Rough' is a clichéd mess that just never really takes off the way it could have. I enjoy her fearless display of overt sensuality, but this was just painful in its unoriginality.

Songs like `Beautiful, Dirty, Rich' and `Money Honey' are deliciously tacky in their exploitation of Gaga's primary concern, money. `Boys Boys Boys' capitalizes on her second foremost thought (you guessed it). All three songs are fun and exciting regardless of the fact that they are nothing overly spectacular. `Brown Eyes' is a different pace for Gaga, and it works rather well. It's nice to see her do something different and not fall flat on her face. It has a soft vulnerability about it that I like, but Gaga is above all else a strong and independent woman, and it shows on every track.

The best tracks here (aside from `LoveGame' and `Paparazzi') are the infectious `Paper Gangster', complete with full on swagger that suits Gaga better than one may think, `Starstruck', which ignites with fiery bravado and funky atmosphere and the closing track `Summerboy', which exploits Gaga's vices with a spunk that isn't seen on most of the album."

...and:

"I found the ABBA inspired `Alejandro' and the similarly styled `Dance in the Dark' to be a tad underwhelming. `Alejandro' feels kind of corny to me, and `Dance in the Dark' is just dated. I like that she can make old feel modern, but this doesn't really feel modern (or fresh) to me. `So Happy I Could Die' takes that very same `dated' club sound and spins it rather freshly, serving up a memorable and exciting trip to the disco.

So, EW stated that the Twilight fans would sink their fangs into `Monster' and `Teeth', two tracks that use the body as feast grounds for lyrical poetry, and while I fervently appose all interest in anything `Twi-related', I absolutely dig both of these tracks, especially the closing `Teeth'. `Teeth' is all sorts of wrong, but so incredibly right at the very same time. I love the way she just goes off about her "bad girl meat". It just has this slinky swagger that is so captivating (her bluntness is refreshing) and so unique in this genre (pop is all tease, no bite...but Gaga is like a ravenous dog)."

In saving the best for last, well, read it yourself:

"And then there is `Speechless', a song that pretty much leaves me just that; speechless. Calling upon influences that are more southern rock than country (think Lynyrd Skynyrd), this song is possibly the best thing she's ever done and proves that she is BEYOND TALENTED. I mean, this girl is not just your average pop princess, she has real chops and musical taste that transcends the boundaries of genre. This song is an effortlessly divine emotional ride that shows real depth for Gaga."

As a whole, I'd rank her work like so:

1) Speechless
2) Summerboy
3) LoveGame
4) Paper Gangster
5) Paparazzi
6) Telephone
7) Starstruck
8) Teeth
9) Bad Romance
10) Boys Boys Boys
11) Poker Face
12) Brown Eyes
13) Monster
14) Beautiful, Dirty, Rich
15) So Happy I Could Die
16) Just Dance
17) Money Honey
18) Eh, Eh
19) Dance in the Dark
20) I Like It Rough
21) The Fame
22) Alejandro

I think I summed it up best when I reviewed `The Fame'.

"In the end I totally love (`THE FAME (MONSTER)'), even if it is uneven in parts. When it hits it hits hard, and even the `less than great' tracks have a quality about them that makes you want to listen anyways. Gaga is a sensation (and who saw that coming?) and she'll continue to be so for a long time to come."

Yeah, that!

Description of The Fame Monster [Deluxe Edition]

"THE FAME MONSTER" TO BE RELEASED IN 3 VERSIONS

The Fame Monster, in three different versions - a standard version of the new 8-song album; a deluxe version which includes both The Fame Monster and her massively successful debut album The Fame; and this collector's edition super-deluxe art book version, which includes both albums, fanzines, 3-D glasses, paper dolls, a puzzle, pictorials, a lock of Lady Gaga's hair and other surprises.

Says Lady Gaga, "In the midst of my creative journey composing The Fame Monster, there came an exciting revelation that this was in fact my sophomore album. I would not add, nor take away any songs from this EP, it is a complete conceptual and musical body of work that can stand on its own two feet. It doesn't need The Fame."

"We may have an economy, but MUSIC HAS NO ECONOMY. I will release four or more singles from The Fame Monster, tour the world with The Monster Ball Tour, and most importantly I insist on honoring my fans with an affordable new album, an album that is as loyal to them, as they have been me."

"For those who do not have my debut album, there are a series of collectible double-disc editions that include both albums and artwork conceived by the Haus of Gaga in collaboration with our mentor Hedi Slimane. Hear the music, see the show, live and love yourself...Lady Gaga."

The standard and deluxe versions of The Fame Monster will be released on November 23, 2009. The collector's edition super-deluxe version will be released on December 15, 2009.

Lady Gaga is the first artist since the inception of monitored airplay to chart four #1 hits at Top 40 Radio - "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "LoveGame," and "Paparazzi." She will perform her next chart-topper, "Bad Romance," on the American Music Awards (ABC) on November 22, 2009.

Has an album title ever been so self-prophetic? In its first year, this electropop opus rocketed Lady Gaga from unknown New York lounge singer to the world?s biggest pop star this side of Britney Spears. The Fame?s brand of pop is shamelessly decadent: 11 of its 13 songs are about money, celebrity, sex, clubbing, or a sticky combination of all four. It?s insipid subject matter, unless you consider Gaga as less of a silly, manufactured blonde than an ingenious artist playing the part of a glitzy pop star. Witness The Fame?s impeccably sleek opening songs, from the carelessly rambling chorus of ?Just Dance? to the snappy, futuristic beat of ?LoveGame?: Gaga?s got the outrageous outfits and dance moves down to a science, but underneath it all, the music is aggressive and authoritarian in ways that most other Top 40 tunes are not. Often compared to Gwen Stefani?s, Gaga?s vocals are in fact richer and rounder, allowing her a certain stylistic versatility, and her personae alternate from wild party kid to vulnerable lover. Some of the risks don?t always pay off, but the Lady Gaga of the dark and ardent megahit ?Poker Face? prevails. She is commandeering enough, bizarre and beguiling enough, to ensure that she?ll be basking in our attention for a very long time. --Erin Thompson
