Music reviews of The Fame Monster

Music Review: Absolutely Gaga for GaGa: 'The Fame Monster' Delivers Incredible Thematic Material
Rating: 5 Stars

I always enjoy remembering how I encountered Lady GaGa and her music. One day, a video was featured on YouTube, and it turned out to be her hit single 'Poker Face'. How many views did the video have at that time? Less than a thousand. Afterward, I encountered another video of hers: 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich'. This video wasn't that popular either, and I began to get the impression she was an up-coming artist. Eventually, I found out she was the mind behind the crazy club banger 'Just Dance'. I was surprised at the variety of music she was capable of performing, and I was also surprised her other singles weren't popping off like her first. I purchased her album 'The Fame' way before all of the GaGa madness came about, and I found the album to be very entertaining. While it had minor issues, it turned out to be a great album. Lady GaGa definitely had potential, but her first album barely scratched the surface of what she was capable of doing. After a year and a half of crazy piano covers and incredible performances, Lady GaGa has turned into an international pop-star. Her videos have several million views, and she has established her own identity as an artist. It's no surprise she has decided to release 'The Fame Monster' in what may be the peak of her popularity in pop-music.

Lady GaGa has insisted that this album isn't a re-release of her first album. I was a bit skeptical, especially since it was only eight tracks long and had a similar title. After picking up the album, I was absolutely taken off guard by the quality of the material. While the album is short in length, every track packs a punch and you'll have a difficult time removing it from your CD changer. 'The Fame Monster' is an album of its own, and it is the complete opposite of her original album. This time, we get a sense of 'humanity', and experience all of the different monsters that come with the fame...it's not all fun and games. We also get a glimpse of the life she left behind before she became a pop-phenomenon. It's conception most definitely falls in line with flipping a coin: on one side you have 'The Fame' and on the other side you have 'The Fame Monster'.

Now, while this may be thematically opposite from her original album, it still maintains a similar style of music. GaGa has quickly matured as an artist, and she knows how to deliver the goods. Most of the tracks have an 80's feel to them, and the instrumentals and lyrics work beautifully together. The lead single 'Bad Romance' does set the mood for the album, and the song itself is a good indication as to whether you'll like the album or not. The songs, however, do maintain a good sense of variety.

One song in particular that stood out from the entire lot was 'Speechless', a song dedicated to her father who was suffering major heart conditions. Apparently, his refusal to have surgery prompted her in creating the song. The song is beautifully composed, and it's some of her best work to date. She incorporates beautiful vocals, with some gorgeous piano and old-school guitar. Her father ended up having surgery after hearing the song, which was pretty emotional.

But, not to worry...GaGa doesn't forget her roots. She still maintains the ability to make some intense club-type records, such as 'Telephone' featuring Beyoncé Knowles and a little darker hit like 'Monster'. Other songs such as 'Dance In The Dark', 'Alejandro' and 'So Happy I Could Die' display her talent of combining thematic lyrics with good up-beat/club instrumentals. She also finishes the album with a track called 'Teeth' , which more on the 'soul' side of things.

The overall album is excellent. Fans that think 'The Fame Monster' is just another re-release might be in for a surprise when they listen to the quality of the material. Lady GaGa demonstrates her incredible ability to compose thematic material that goes beyond 'pop' music. She has established her own identity as an artist, and she's not someone you can imitate easily. Her sophomore album solidifies her position as one of the best pop-artists today. Fans can expect great things from this album. It's up-beat- tempo, conception, and 80's feel make it some of her best work to date, surpassing her first album in quality. While the album is pretty short, it's still worth every buck. The album is available in a standard version with it's initial eight tracks, or a Deluxe Edition that includes her original album for a total of twenty tracks.

There's even a box-set coming out with strands of her hair...weird as hell...but I have to admit I'm digging her style.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Pros: Well though out thematic lyrics and album conception, incredible instrumentals, and a great variety of style within each individual track.

Cons: At eight tracks, this album ends too soon.

Description of The Fame Monster

"THE FAME MONSTER" TO BE RELEASED IN 3 VERSIONS

The Fame Monster, in three different versions - a standard version of the new 8-song album; a deluxe version which includes both The Fame Monster and her massively successful debut album The Fame; and this collector's edition super-deluxe art book version, which includes both albums, fanzines, 3-D glasses, paper dolls, a puzzle, pictorials, a lock of Lady Gaga's hair and other surprises.

Says Lady Gaga, "In the midst of my creative journey composing The Fame Monster, there came an exciting revelation that this was in fact my sophomore album. I would not add, nor take away any songs from this EP, it is a complete conceptual and musical body of work that can stand on its own two feet. It doesn't need The Fame."

"We may have an economy, but MUSIC HAS NO ECONOMY. I will release four or more singles from The Fame Monster, tour the world with The Monster Ball Tour, and most importantly I insist on honoring my fans with an affordable new album, an album that is as loyal to them, as they have been me."

"For those who do not have my debut album, there are a series of collectible double-disc editions that include both albums and artwork conceived by the Haus of Gaga in collaboration with our mentor Hedi Slimane. Hear the music, see the show, live and love yourself...Lady Gaga."

The standard and deluxe versions of The Fame Monster will be released on November 23, 2009. The collector's edition super-deluxe version will be released on December 15, 2009.

Lady Gaga is the first artist since the inception of monitored airplay to chart four #1 hits at Top 40 Radio - "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "LoveGame," and "Paparazzi." She will perform her next chart-topper, "Bad Romance," on the American Music Awards (ABC) on November 22, 2009.

Has an album title ever been so self-prophetic? In its first year, this electropop opus rocketed Lady Gaga from unknown New York lounge singer to the world?s biggest pop star this side of Britney Spears. The Fame?s brand of pop is shamelessly decadent: 11 of its 13 songs are about money, celebrity, sex, clubbing, or a sticky combination of all four. It?s insipid subject matter, unless you consider Gaga as less of a silly, manufactured blonde than an ingenious artist playing the part of a glitzy pop star. Witness The Fame?s impeccably sleek opening songs, from the carelessly rambling chorus of ?Just Dance? to the snappy, futuristic beat of ?LoveGame?: Gaga?s got the outrageous outfits and dance moves down to a science, but underneath it all, the music is aggressive and authoritarian in ways that most other Top 40 tunes are not. Often compared to Gwen Stefani?s, Gaga?s vocals are in fact richer and rounder, allowing her a certain stylistic versatility, and her personae alternate from wild party kid to vulnerable lover. Some of the risks don?t always pay off, but the Lady Gaga of the dark and ardent megahit ?Poker Face? prevails. She is commandeering enough, bizarre and beguiling enough, to ensure that she?ll be basking in our attention for a very long time. --Erin Thompson
