Music Review: A modest classic

It's a bit of a shame, really, that this album remains the most available from this period of Labelle's career. I find it the least musically interesting when compared to "Chameleon" and "Phoenix," both from the same era. This is not to say it is a poor album - rather it's excellent, and you won't go wrong when you buy it. But all the songs are short, only 3-4 minutes, with the longest, Nona Hendryx's "You Turn Me On" reaching only 4:37, and Allen Toussaint's production values obviously leaned toward safety and sales. His modest talent is also seen in the two Toussaint written songs, both of which provided little to challenge the women's musical capacity. Those songs would have been better dropped in favor of expanding one or more of the other songs. Fortunately, Patti Labelle's talent and voice doesn't give up and, if the arrangements aren't what they could've been, at least the listener can be get lost in how she, along with Hendryx and Dash, used their vocal instruments.
Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to re-releases of Labelle's neglected other albums.
