Music Review: The ONLY group who still can !

It is really something that Patti, Sarah & Nona are back together. Not only doing concerts as a group, but releasing a whole CD of new music. That is big news. This is a really good album , and from the opening song CANDLELIGHT, it's off to a great start. Patti starts it solo, but what I like best is when Sarah & Nona come in for the chorus. Now THAT is the sound of Labelle ringing true once again. There are many fine moments on here. It's rewarding to know that after 30+ years of doing solo albums & work, that Patti, Sarah & Nona care enough about each other AND their fans to come back together. Still sounding phenomenal, still relevant & creating fresh sounds. What I like best on BACK TO NOW are the songs on which you can hear the trademark Labelle sound. DEAR ROSA has the most gospel-ish feel of their 70's sound, & being that Nona produced it, that must be the reason. She knows the group's strengths. SUPERLOVER is a mighty good understated Labelle ballad, with some softer sounds, which is a nice suprise. HOW LONG I really like too, as you can hear all their voices so well, including some high notes from Sarah. This message song sounds like Labelle circa their PRESSURE COOKIN' album 1973! TEARS FOR THE WORLD is another good message song, with Patti on lead & great backgrounds by Sarah & Nona with the refrain " have mercy, have mercy on the world " , though I'd love to hear them all taking a verse on this song of social awareness. And TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE is the funkiest, most uptempo rock type cut on here, with Nona taking lead vocals. It's a great remake of the Mother's Finest [ another important black rock band ] song from 1977. It sounds like it could have fit on their classic NIGHTBIRDS album. The killer cut is the last one - MISS OTIS REGRETS. Patti's performance is nothing short of show-stopping. This 1970 track was done before even their 1st LABELLE album. It's a dramatic piece of rock theatre, & illustrates the group's vision of what they were to do later with epic story, dramatic type songs [ HOLLYWOOD, PHOENIX, SYSTEM ].
SYSTEM finally gets recorded in a studio version at last. This song is legendary as Labelle had only been performing it live in concert , as far back as 1975. This social/political song written by Nona has equal parts for all 3 of them. Lenny Kravitz produced it, & I was a bit surprised that it has more R&B production on it than the live rock arrangement that they did. It's good, but if Nona had produced it, it could have rocked more. ROLL OUT is catchy, & a concession to make a modern record. But why does Wyclef Jean think he's so important that he's rapping on this song, and worse, buries Sarah & Nona's vocals in a modern production mishap? WITHOUT YOU IN MY LIFE is a nice, Patti type adult contemporary ballad, surprisingly written by Nona, but again, the backgrounds are buried in the mix. If only some of the songs had more of the trademark Labelle sound of their voices singing in gospel-ish unison. Another uptempo rock or dance hybrid track would have given it an extra something too. But, minor complaints given that Labelle are back together, singing again, and real musicians are playing on this album, like back in the days of real music. Labelle - the ONLY girl group [ actually, MORE than a girl group ] who could come back together & make revelatory new music. They ain't no oldies act. It's a godsend that they're still all here, and that they did it. A real gift for the fans!
