Music Review: 1980s Synthpop Revival

The days of synthpop have returned and are livelier than ever. La Roux, comprised of Elly Jackson (the one after which the band is named because of her red hair) and Ben Langmaid, is a musical duo that has taken influence from 1980s synthpop bands and created a fusion of synthesized beats and harmonized vocals. On their debut album La Roux (Bonus Track Version), Jackson is on the vocals while Langmaid stays behind the scenes taking part in the lyric writing and music production processes. Though it may appear to be more of a one-woman show in live performances, there is truly a group effort in creating their catchy tunes.
The album starts off with La Roux's second single, In For the Kill, whose quick tempo balances the layers of basic synth beats and melodies. The 1980s influence from bands such as Human League and Depeche Mode is obvious, as they were known for using beats created with FM Synthesis. However, the sound is modernized through adding more musical layers and a fairly constant underlying drum beats. It even shows-up the debut single, Quicksand, whose melodies are not as rich. However, Quicksand is still a good example of their use of multidimensional melodies in conjunction with harmonizing vocals. There are faint, yet distinct drum synths, along with varying beats that sound as if they have come from an early analog synthesizer and tin drums.
Bulletproof brings more of a dance-club vibe. This song sounds the most like a 1980s radio hit with a face lift. The melodies clearly take advantage of computer technology through the stereo effects. As well, with more FM computer algorithms available than in the 80s, they are able to create more detailed melodies and bring life to the song. They have taken the common arcade game sounding pop songs from earlier electronic music days and created a fun, fuller dance song.
The next few songs demonstrate the same abilities and 1980s influence; however, when Reflections are Protection comes through it is clear from the beginning that it is going to sound vastly different. The heavy bass beats create an electro-funk vibe that is unlike any other song on the album. However, there is less of a distraction as there are only three components: drum machine beats, synthesized bass melodies and synth beats from an electronic keyboard.
The album is rounded out by Saviour, the bonus track, that combines Jackson's unaltered and distorted vocals, laying them over simple synth beats. It is a good choice for a bonus track because it introduces more synthesized bass beats and vocal distortion to create a wholesome, rich song. It is the second longest song on the album, but also one of the most basic lyrically. There is more of a focus on creating a solid musical combination between the tempo and pitch of the vocals (wether they are distorted or not) and the synthesized beats, rather than distinguishing the two.
Aside from bringing more life to the songs through layered and varied synth and drum machine beats, La Roux also uses psychoacoustic techniques to create surround sound effects which distinguishes their sound from other synthpop groups. In almost every song on the album there is at least one moment where it is used. It takes advantage of a key way to enhance a listener's experience and keep him or her enthralled.
La Roux filled their album with just under 50 minutes worth of flowing, creative and catchy songs. They show a range of electronic music that varies from highly 1980s influenced beats to electro-funk that blend perfectly with Elly Jackson's vocals. This musical duo is here to stay and can only produce more creative music in the future as they continue to experiment.
