Music Review: Incredibly Thought Provoking

This is the music of the cerebral vertex of the universe. Dissonant, droney, harmonic, psychedelic, essential. I find it criminal that I am only coming across this release this late. I knew who La Monte Young was; I had done research on him before due to his influence over the Velvet Underground's Angus Maclise, John Cale and even Lou Reed (who supposedly tried to make his own vision-of-sorts called "Metal Music Machine" based on some of Young's ideas).
I had heard no mention of this album from fellow music cohorts until I was became increasingly curious about Just Intonation. So I ended up downloading this album and some Harry Partch recordings to get a clearer idea.
When the first movement hit around the fifteen minute mark - when the piece began to gather some momentum and color - I was convinced that Rykodisc had bludgeoned an immense blow to American Culture by not making this widely available. I find it culturally criminal to let something like this slip into relative obscurity (ironically, Young has been accused of implementing the same inaction on Dream Syndicate releases as well as others). This is one of the most interesting recordings I've heard - that is to say this epic sits on a plane so far outside any of the aforementioned aural soundscapes that I've adored over the years. If there were a god, it would make incredible music like this continuously. Yes, this definitively is a magnum opus, a classic, a "monumental modern marvel" and I'm looking forward to all future listenings and studies of this.
