Music Review: A Great Album

Charleston, S.C.-based quintet Jump, Little Children traverses diverse dreamscapes on MAGAZINE, the band's dazzling national debut. From the inventive opening track, "Not Today," in which Jay Clifford's vigorous voice propels from phantasmagoric pits of desperation, to the final chords of the piercing lullaby "Close Your Eyes," the album showcases a kaleidoscope of show-stopping rockers and exquisite melodies. This eclectic, electric excursion into the minds of five twentysomething musicians as they contemplate various stages of dreams, stardom and art is perpetually fast, fresh and furious. It surpasses all of JLC's achievements since emerging as a mainstay of the East Coast music scene in the mid-'90's - and that's high praise, given the band's erstwhile mastery of Irish roots music and folk rock. The album's first single "Come Out Clean" is as catchy a song as you're likely to hear, with layered lyrics queued to a contagious chorus: "I want to live in a magazine/I want to be obscure with a girl obscene." Two tracks, "Body Parts" and "Habit" feature soulful songster Matt Bivins in the vocal lead. Underscored with bustling, buzzing insect noises, Jonathan Gray's libidinous bass and Ward Williams' delicate cello, "Habit," is sonic poetry, tinged by hip-hop lyrics juxtaposing urban addictions with three acts of a theatrical play. Other breakthrough tracks include "Cathedrals," a stunning ode to spiritual inspiration; "Violent Dreams," a blistering entreaty to the night's nightmarish beckoning; and "B-13," an elegant meditation about life's passages. Other highlights include "My Guitar," a tongue-in-cheek ditty about a man's courtship with his beloved instrument, featuring Clifford and Williams' hot-dogging on the six-string. Throughout the album, the music is consistently powerful, with Evan Bivins providing a driving force of percussion as a strident beat to the proceedings. MAGAZINE is a restless triumph, a dreamy flight of fantasy filled with zealous melancholy and playful ambition. It's an album that flirts with greatness and legitimally gets away with it. JLC's deft deconstruction of dreams summons listeners to activate their imagination and get emotionally involved in the music
