Music Review: A fine recording of Rossini's early masterpiece!

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this recoring is fantastic in every way. And I have listened to the Ramey/Battle/Desderi recording on Deutsche Grammophon (now deleted) and the Naxos as a comparison. Firstly, the orchestral playing is clearer than for Desderi, the overture really sparkles, the string playing crystal clear. Even though it says that its a live recording, do not let that put you off. The sound is perfect, singers placed forward. Now to the singers...I must confess I had no idea who these people were except for Claudia Schneider as Marianna (who's career has flourished throughout Europe in recent years!!!). But they tackle the Rossinian fioratura admirably. Surprise, surprise...Hiroko Kouda sings beautifully, and even though I greatly admire Kathleen Battle's 'Ah! voi condur volete...Ah! donate il caro sposo' Hiroko Kouda's secure technique can surprise. Also this recording is more faithful to the original Pesaro Edition edited by Zedda. If you can find the Desderi recording, bag it!!!! But for now, buy this version, not the Naxos. Bravo!!!
