Music Review: Good but room for improvement

First the good - I was looking for some well recorded, well performed Indian devotional music that a westerner could relate to and I found it. My gold standard was the Radha Krishna album in the 70's produced by George Harrison.
This album was above and beyond in terms of sound quality and clean musicianship. When the rhythms accelerated there was a real excitement and it almost hit the spot.
Downsides were:
1) Couldn't get over a kind of New Agey feel to it. There was too little uptempo and too much downtempo, and overall it had a kind of Kumbaya over-earnest feel to it. Also;
2) Krishna Das clearly has a good voice and musical sensibilities. But his constant diaphragm heavy vocalizations reminds you of the guy leading Bajans after Yoga class that's a bit too proud of his pumped up lung capacity. And it gets tiresome for its lack variety and nuance. Volume is nice, but phrasing is better.
My guess is that these two criticisms are well known to Mr. Das - but he also understands his niche audience and maybe plays to them a bit too faithfully. OTOH since he's the only one in his narrow niche - who am I to second guess success? He probably relaxes to Dianna Krall or Rage Against the Machine after his concerts.
After all that said, there are several tracks here that I keep coming back to.
