Music reviews of Kraftwerk 1 (LTD Re-Issue)

Music Review: it's alright
Rating: 4 Stars

Update- November 17, 2010:

Well, this album HAS in fact grown on me. I decided to listen to it again last night after a three month break, and I have a better appreciation for it as a result. My rating for Kraftwerk's debut has now gone from a 3 to a 4 on the rating scale.

"Megaherz" really does feature some magnificent flute work once the flute jam actually takes off, and "Ruckzuck" reminds me of a chaotic, noisy nightmare in a similar vein as some of King Crimson's more outrageous early efforts. It's actually really good. By that I mean, it may *seem* chaotic and noisy in a "pointless noodling" kind of way initially, but it actually has a lot more going for it than just noise. I've never really experienced anything like it before. Repeated listens may even reveal a carefully put together piece of art, in fact.

"Vom Himmel Hoch" is really cool as well. The airplanes in the beginning paint a grim and tragic scene and they eventually lead way to a steady and distinctive rhythm section that would soon become Kraftwerk's signature sound and style. At least, that rhythm wouldn't be out of place on their Computer World album. That rhythm is an indication to me that a very small portion of this album isn't THAT extremely different from Kraftwerk's more popular stuff later on.

When it's all set and done however, "Stratovarius" STILL stands as my favorite song. I just absolutely love that haunting and ominous 3-minute introduction. It leads way to some loud and highly distinctive drum work, and then soon after, some insane Robert Fripp-like guitar playing. I can't say I've ever experienced anything like this though. It's definitely clamorous, but it's NOT "noise for the sake of noise" or whatever. There's actually something memorable beneath all this so-called noise. Only repeated listens will reveal these memorable portions.

Anyway, the rest of this review is actually my original review, and my first impressions of the album stored completely intact.

This is my first ever Kraftwerk album, and... I probably shouldn't have started from the very beginning, haha. I was warned but ignored everyone who told me to avoid it. Oh well. What's done is done.

It's not necessarily a bad album by any means. It's just that musically, whatever Kraftwerk is going for here leaves me completely cold and somewhat confused.

I mean, at least 85% of this album feels like complete fluff to me. Besides a few pleasant flute solos in "Ruckzuck" and "Megaherz", there's not a whole lot left to really satisfy my music-quenching needs.

"Stratovarius" is probably the coolest song here because the introduction would be a PERFECT way to scare children on Halloween night. It practically sounds like ghosts are coming through the speakers- really neat sound they got here.

Of course those same guitar and bass effects were used by both Hawkwind and the Soft Machine (and done *much* more effectively by these two artists in my opinion).

Other moments of the album you will experience some eerily quiet airplane diving sounds along with some explosion-like effects, probably indicating a war scenario. It's alright, but... again, it leaves me completely uninterested.

I sure hope Kraftwerk has better albums than this, and that they didn't base their entire career around THIS kind of experimentation.
