Music reviews of Untouchables

Music Review: Korn's first real experimental album
Rating: 4 Stars

And if you listen to all of Korn's other realeases you will realize that it IS an experimental album. It sounds like nothing Korn has ever done before, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your taste. The funny thing about Korn and experimental albums is that after Life is Peachy EVERY Korn album was an experimental album of greater or lesser degree, except Take a Look in the Mirror. That is why Korn is still around, because of albums like this and Follow the Leader and See You On The Other Side. It also ensures that Korn never gets old, and gives them high re-listenable value--no album is really alike at all, except that pain and insanity are on every one. This album is somewhere in the middle of my rating of Korn albums. I think its better than Follow the Leader and Life is Peachy, and See You On The Other Side, but not as good as Korn self-titled, Issues, or Take a Look in the Mirror.(thats right, TALITM is better than this, in my opinion, because its simply more enjoyable, fun, and has a more kick-ass feel to it. A lot of work was put into this album, and it shows. Jonathan Davis's voice is more synthesized and harmonic. There is more emotional songs on here, but with the exception of Alone I Break, which is a great song, none of it really feels all that genuine. As a matter of fact, this is one of Korn's LEAST emotional albums, like SYOTOS and TALITM. Korn self titled, Life is Peachy, Issues and even Follow the Leader have more raw emotion than this. Which brings me to another point. The emotion on this is the farthest thing from raw. This is refined music, which Korn fans may love or hate, but it sure as hell isn't raw. (sidenote, this is one of the hardest reviews I have ever done because my opinion of this album changes every time I listen to it) This took alot of work for korn, and it deserves a 4 star rating, because it has some really good songs on here, but it definitely isn't one of Korn's best.

1 Here to Stay; 10/10 A really heavy song, one of the best songs Korn has ever done, extremely catchy. Kind of a misleading start to the album, because most of the songs aren't this heavy.

2 Make Believe: 7/10 Not that great a song, kind of forgettable. Takes too long to get going and once it does it just kind of drags on.

3 Blame: 8/10 Really catchy bridge and chorus. Jonathan really sings on this song! Not a real stand-out track but I burned it onto a mix cd anyways for some reason.

4 Hollow Life: 8/10 This is what I was talking about earlier about having mixed opinions about this album every time I listen to it. Sometimes I really like this song, other times I just skip past it. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and give it an 8, because it is really well done. Also, the lyrics on these songs actually mean something, so listen up!

5 Bottled up Inside: 7/10 Sometimes I like this song, but more often than not I skip past it so I will give it a 7. Also, the message of the song has been done so many times before by Korn, so its kind of old by now. Not a bad song, pretty hard rocker.

6 Thoughtless: 8/10 AGAIN!!!! Most of the time I like this song, so it gets a 8. That is how I will rate these songs, I guess; depending on whether I skip past it more than listen to it. Really good song, dont try to listen to the lyrics, instead look them up. This is another example of technical stuff on this album. Voiceovers by Jon cutting into the song, its also why they dont play any songs except Here to Stay when they are touring.

7 Hating: 7/10 Not a great song, but well done. Usually skip past this song, but its catchy in places. Also, this isn't a hate-filled song or anything, so don't expect anything heavy. If you're looking for one of those, try almost any song on TALITM.

8 One More Time: 8/10 Not great, but catchy. Another song that you will listen to but not skip to. A great song to listen to if you are listening to the whole album at once.

9 Alone I Break: 10/10 Second best song on the album. Watch the music video for it, its amazing. Obviously its a suicide song, and its very well done. Instead of listening to it when I am depressed, I GET depressed when I listen to it. Another Korn classic.

10 Embrace: 5/10 I can't begin to say how much I hate this song. It is a hard-rocker but so what? It may be a matter of taste, but when I listened to this album all the way through(which I always do when I get a new album) it was all I could do not to push skip.
Worst song on the album, closely followed by.....

11 Beat it Upright: 6/10 Yup, you guessed it. This is the worst part of the album, these two songs. It is the mandatory sex-song on the album(this album strangely lacks any perversion which Kornheads have becomed accustomed to). Strangely, it sounds like a gay sex song. Either way, I dont care, but the song itself sucks.

12 Wake up Hate: 8/10 Almost all my love for this song is gone now, but when I first listened to this song I loved it. Sounds a little like the previous two, but is alot more catchy and kick-ass. Anyone notice how industrial Korn sounds on these three tracks?

13 Im Hiding: 9/10 This is the title track of Untouchables. I know its titled Im Hiding, but it is. You will know what I mean when you listen to the song itself. Example of the lyrics: These places all I ever think about is lost in time, these faces haunting me im looking back and they are mine! Now look at the cover on amazon. Hes talking about the faces on the cover, and what the title Untouchables means is those really screwed up losers that no one seems to care about. It is a really great track with lots of meaning. Besides that, its catchy.

14 No Ones There: 9/10 Another meaningful track. I think it has alot of meanings to it, such as: to all these greedy people trying to feed on what is mine. I think he is talking about the record companies, but he could be talking about the crowds at his concerts. Another example: do you think they will remember, or will we just be replaced? That is self-evident. There is others, but I dont want to take up too much space. However, its a good song, and a decent closer, but its probably one of Korn's worst closing tracks. Also marks the end of Korn's long closers. There is also a bonus track, but it is just a really bad remix of Here to Stay.

All in all, I would say click buy if you are a Korn fan. I am not going to say you will love it or hate it, since I am kind of on the fence about it, but it isn't as bad as many fans say it is. Remember, guys, the more they experiment, the longer they stay relevant, the more they stay relevant, the more the chances are that they will experiment again and come out with a album that you will love. :)

The band that unwittingly begat the current, if waning, rap-metal frenzy, Korn has been semidormant since 1999's multiplatinum Issues, while bands they inspired, such as Linkin Park, have ruled the charts and minds of disenfranchised teens. The wait for Untouchables' 14 cutting cuts is more than worth it, however. The quintet's heavy sound and lyrical angst have not been dulled by success. Singer Jonathan Davis's often agonized, cathartic lyrics and slightly lispy, emotive delivery are as heavy and varied as on previous outings. On the first single, "Here to Stay," which boasts a spooky, Nine Inch Nails feel and Fieldy's aggro, down-tuned bass, Davis growls in pain, "This state is elevating / As the hurt turns into hating / Anticipating all the f---ed up feelings again."

Among and within songs, Korn move seamlessly and dynamically from gentle, spooky, and lushly melodic to a bass-heavy propulsive, explosive musicality. "Embrace" is almost grandiose and Cult-like in its rock drama, in contrast to the punky, straight-up "Wake Up Hate," on which Davis's vocals are especially creepy and Marilyn Manson-like as he rants: "I'm, I'm filthy/ Wasted piece of s--t/ I am disgusting/ Take me away." Untouchables, with its brutal introspection and hints of misogyny, is sure to earn its parental advisory sticker. But the album is still a must-have: 62 minutes of deeply felt, ultra-intense spewings, a tour de force that will strike a chord with fans and critics alike. --Katherine Turman
