Music Review: The censorship completely ruins it...

First and foremost, let me say the following:
EVERY SINGLE MTV UNPLUGGED ALBUM IS CENSORED!
There is NEVER an unedited version of one. Ever.
Do NOT buy an "MTV Unplugged" album untill you know and realize this!!
Staind's "MTV Unplugged" album WAS CENSORED!
And here we find Korn's are, as well.
NEVER WILL THERE BE AN UNCENSORD "MTV UNPLUGGED" ALBUM!
Why this is, is because the "MTV Unplugged" albums are not released via the band's actual record label (in this case, Virgin Records). They're released via an independant label that MTV owns with the permission of the band's label to be distributed legally for purchase. Provided the bands are funded for their performances.
Therefore, the band has no say over how the music is distributed at all. And sadly, MTV chooses to censor their "Unplugged" performances. And probably all official "MTV" released albums, as well.
With that said, know that this album (along with all other MTV Unplugeed albums, past and future) is censored! And it honestly ruins the album. Especially in Korn's case.
I'm honestly not too big of a fan of acoustic Korn. And only really enjoy a few songs. But the ones that are good, end up completely ruined by the censorship.
Songs like:
Throw Me Away
Make Me Bad
Got The Life
Freak on a Leash
Twisted Transistor
All completely ruined by censorship.
And sadly, that's about half the album!
That's right folks, half the album is censored.
Consider that before buying it!
But that's not saying that the songs suck. That's just saying that censorship has taken away really good value from some pretty decent acoustic versions of some great Korn songs.
Got The Life is easily one of the best tracks on here. Too bad it was censored. Throw Me Away is amazing, and alot like the original. Jon actually screams in it, instead of singing his way through it. Again, too bad it's censored! It might've been flatout the best track, here.
Censorship set aside, the best song on here (that needs no censoring) is Coming Undone. But even this acoustic performance somewhat pails in comparison to their AOL Sessions version of it. Which was alot better!
Overall, the album is okay if you can get past the fact that half of it is censored. And the other half of it is mediocre. Korn doing acoustic isn't a bad thing, but def. isn't their strongpoint.
Maybe Jon and the crew will release uncensored versions in the future. Untill then, i'd strongly suggest passing this album by, untill "Korn Kovers" or the next full leingth studio album are released by Korn themselves.
Only look into buying this if 1, you've read my review and fully completely understand that it's censored (as ALL "MTV Unplugged" albums are). And two, the performances are at most times, mediocre. And the ones that ARE good, are completely ruined by the censorship bestowed upon them.

Got The Life
Hollow Life
These songs really seem to be the only ones that actually "fit" the acoustic performances they were given, and were pretty decent standing next to their originals. But again, sadly were censored when needed to be so.
MTV ruins another potentually "decent" acoustic performance.

Filmed at MTV's Times Square studio, "MTV Unplugged: KORN" features acoustic performances of the band's greatest hits, along with several new songs exclusive to their "Unplugged" performance. KORN is also joined by The Cure and Amy Lee of Evanescence for this one time only performance.Korn has made a career out of playing loud, angry rock & roll??loud and angry enough that placing the band in the unplugged setting has, until now, seemed unthinkable. But the risk has more or less paid off. Tracks such as "Blind" and "Hollow Life" work best in this new context??each filled with a sense of drama but not melodrama, their essential emotional weight is given new heft by opting for intense calm rather than an epic??and overwrought??musical maelstrom. Others, such as "Twisted Transistor" teeter on self-parody; a guest turn from Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee for "Freak on a Leash" is inspired, one from the Cure for "Make Me Bad/In Between Days" doesn't quite live up to its promise on paper. But the band's reading of Radiohead's "Creep" is heartfelt and true, making this unplugged endeavor worthwhile and truly entertaining.--Jedd Beaudoin
