Music reviews of Nogatco Rd

Music Review: He's Kool like that
Rating: 4 Stars

Probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a true Dr. Octagon sequel. Mr. Nogatco, who was created in the same vein as Dr. Octagon(Nogatco is Octagon backwards, as has been mentioned thousands of times previously), is just as obsessed with little green men, Jupiter, and flying saucers as his predecessor. The music itself is also, while not as groundbreaking as Dan The Automator's production on Dr. Octagonecologyst, still spacy music you'd expect to hear after being abducted by the aforementioned UFO. Does that mean this album's dope like its older brother? You bet it does. Classic? Not quite.

This album is definitely one of the best of 2006, and that's saying a lot considering the large amount of dope music that was released this year. In fact, I'd only put Hi-Tek, Lupe, Ghostface, and JMT's releases above this in terms of quality, making the top five of my favorite releases this year thus far. Now, I may like this album a bit more than others; I'm biased towards Keith, and I also enjoy absurd hip-hop that transcends the boundaries of what we consider appropriate, suitable music.

Kool Keith is able to deliver one of his most focused efforts in years under the Mr. Nogatco alias. He is deadset on delivering a dope album to his very inconsistent discography, and does so here. Some people say Keith's space-age diatribes are getting old and repetitive, but as long as Keith manages to make it fun, and revitalize it, I have no problem with it; and Keith manages to do just that on this release. This is creepy, this is insane, this is downright, as I've described Keith on so many occasions, bugged-out. Not an insult in anyway, but the utmost compliment to Keith's style.

At the same time, while this album is dope, he's released better. On the boards, while the production is tight, it isn't the best musical soundscape Keith's had to work with. On the microphone, while Keith has always had an off-beat, to even sloppy flow, he's always managed to make it work; he really, really pushes that on this album. On a large number of the songs, Keith doesn't rap in the traditional sense; instead, he just spouts off random sentences, describing atoms and the solar system, and rides on his personality to make it work. While it does work, it can get irritating, and dissapointing in ways, knowing if Keith tried just a little bit harder, he could've released an absolute classic.

This isn't classic, but it's still some of the illest ish he's released, especially within the last few years. Recommended to Keith fans, but for others, it may be difficult to swallow.

Description of Nogatco Rd

A new classic is born from Hip Hop's most outrageous and unpredictable artist, Kool Keith (Black Elvis, Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom). "Nogatco Rd." is Keith's most inventive and highly anticipated album in years. Complete with UFO conspiracies, alien autopsies, coded space raps, and an amazing array of some of the most original tracks in years. Nogatco Rd. features strong and intricate Hip Hop production that is dusted with a dabble of hard rock, electronic and celestial soundscapes.

The "Nogatco Rd." album is also an Enhanced CD that is loaded with features including a 50's style Sci-Fi mini-movie starring Kool Keith (viewable on a computer CD-ROM drive). Other features also include a digital comic book, digital photo album and other treats.

Produced by Iz-Real (of the acclaimed MF Doom/Viktor Vaughn release "Venomous Villain"), "Nogatco Rd." also features guest appearances from progressive Hip Hop stars Sage Francis aka Xual Zan and the king of hard hitting avant-garde Hip Hop, Sole (of Anticon). Talented beatmakers DiViNCi, Jahson, Mr. Hill, EDK, Carl Kavorkian, Broken Klutch and D. Watcher also contribute. Welcome to the world of Hip Hop music's most enigmatic figure; a sinister, scientific Hip Hop genius known as Mr. Nogatco aka Kool Keith; reborn in rare form.
