Music reviews of Matthew

Music Review: Underrated - this CD needs to be understood in context
Rating: 5 Stars

The most impresive thing to me about Keith is the liquid flow of his rhymes. He transforms his voice into one of the most engrossing instruments. Equally important is the fact that his lyrics are delving into issues - subversive, abrasive while at the same time lyrical and inspiring, Keith's lyrics are prime examples of the best that hip-hop has to offer.

With that said, many of the criticisms that I have seen of this album refer to the weak beats or repetitive nature of the songs but that is part of the real beauty of the album. Keith dons different personas for his albums. They allow him to transcend his own personality and become the characters in his songs. This albums features Keith as a young egotistical gangster-rapper. In a brilliantly ironic move Keith fills the record with over a dozen songs with nearly identical subject matter and (for that matter) nearly identical beats and he manages to not only make it listenable but shine through with some incredible rhymes. Look at tracks like Operation Extortion and Extravagant Traveller. Keith is at his lyrical best with lines (from Extravagant Traveller) like:

You wanna rap big man?
Take Mickey Mouse off your chest.
I let you wear your vest.
Plaid shirts with stripes,
is that how your stylist make you dress?
She should be sued for that,
contact renewed for that,
and on stage you should be boo'd for that.
I'm gonna tap you on the back,
and let everybody know they whack.

Typing the lyrics of course does them know justice like Keith's liquid flow. Nonetheless you would be hard pressed to match the quality of these lines on 99% of hip hop records. The repetitive nature of the record is a beautiful parody of "Whack Prime-Time MC's" that predominate hip hop. He shows how the secret to good hip hop is not to make yourself into some ridiculous caricature of a gangster - it is rather to innovate and subversively challenge people. Like all great artists to experience Kool Keith is to challenged Masterfully subtle he does not scream his message, his intent is implicit. Armed with smooth lyrics and sardonic tone he makes a direct assault on hip hop in songs like "Lived in the Projects" and "27 shots" exemplifies this point. Anyone seeking further examples of Keith's sarcasm need look no further than the tail end of "I don't believe you":

You dance with James Brown - I don't believe you
You own a Dodge truck - I don't believe you
You work at 7-11...

No one in their right mind could accuse Keith of taking lines like this seriously. On many of the songs he satires himself right along side the hip hop industry. The beauty of this album is in seeing the extent to which Keith can transform himself to play a part. Dr Doom, Dr Octagon, Kool Keith, whatever pseudonyme he chooses it is pure creative genius.

Description of Matthew

His 14th Album of the Year. 17 Tracks.
He's naked! On Matthew, Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MCs fame removes all of the capes, masks, plastic Elvis wigs, and warped rap personas (Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, Big Willy Smith) he's recorded under over the years. Unfortunately, this one-time psychiatric patient is at his best when his rhymes and beats are completely out in left field. On this nonconcept album, his "music industry sucks" manifesto is disappointingly unoriginal. On "27 Shots" Keith issues a challenge to dumb groupies, dumber MCs, and Keith wannabes. Likewise, on "Baddest MC" he rambles on about the lack of individuality in the music industry, dissing male rappers who are so soft they "wear leg warmers and tights." He manages to keep it somewhat surreal on "I Don't Believe You," where he flaunts his patented unconventional rhyme scheme. But Matthew lacks the futuristic beat constructions that highlighted Keith's earlier works, such as Black Elvis/Lost in Space. Keith's blinding vitriol against the rap industry has prevented him from crafting an interesting album. He obviously should have focused more attention on these lackluster beats and rhymes. --Dalton Higgins
