Music Review: The True Glam Divas!

Klymaxx, the brain child of drummer Bernadette Cooper, formed in the late 70s as a group of female musicians, singers, songwriters, and producers. The group went through some lineup changes before settling on their "classic" lineup in the 80s for their albums, "Meeting In the Ladies Room," and "Klymaxx." Cooper, along with Joyce "Fenderella" Irby, Cheryl "Unruly" Cooley, Lynn Malsby, Robin "Space Baby" Gridder and Lorena "Lungs" Stewart made some of the brashest, cool and fun songs of that period.

Nobody had attitude like Klymaxx in the 80s. Their breakout song, "The Men All Pause" put all the men on notice in the club that they were the flyest and fiercest females in the joint! Bernadette Cooper also introduced her famous "Slap Me!" tag in the song. The next single and title track, "Meeting in The Ladies Room" was another fun and funky song that introduced Lorena Stewart's strong, diva voice that warned the ladies in the club that if they stepped to their men, reprecussions would be taken! But everything about Klymaxx songs weren't attitude driven. They proved they could be just as convincing on heartfelt love songs like the early Babyface penned "I'd Still Say Yes" featuring Howard Hewitt on background vocals, became a quiet storm classic, "Man Sized Love," from the "Running Scared" Soundtrack and their signature song, the Lynn Malsby penned "I Miss You" which featured Joyce Irby's tender and smooth voice, became a love letter for women and men longing for lost love and and also became an instant classic. After the success of their 1986 self-titled album, that featured hits like the outrageous "Sexy," and the appropiately titled for Klymaxx, "Divas Need Love Too," Cooper and Irby left the group to pursue solo careers with Malsby departing soon afterward. Cooley, Stewart, and Gridder soldiered on as a trio and even scored a Top 3 R&B single in 1990 with "Good Love," but brokeup shortly after that. The remaining years had Cooley reforming a new Klymaxx with new musicians and vocalists that resulted in a legal battle for years with Bernadette Cooper, who formed the original Klymaxx. The ladies reunited (without Cooley and Gridder) for the VH1 special "Bands Reunited" in 2004 and played a concert in Los Angeles that was standing room only. There's even been talk that the "classic" Klymaxx may reunite for a reunion tour and new CD.

Klymaxx laid the groundwork for strong, independent women who took charge of their lives. They were not shy about letting you know it was all about them, but they weren't so arrogant that you didn't relate to them. They wrote, produced and played their own songs. They also had that 80s fashion sense and dubbed themselves "Glam Divas!," with the crazy hair, spandex, lace, bras, makeup and heels, but they were always taken seriously as musicians. George Clinton personally requested to work with them and Prince personally invited them to open for him on his "Around the World In A Day" tour in 1985. Female artists of today owe debt of gratitude to the 'Maxx. Nobody was a "Fierce" as them!
