As with her Debussy selection, Klàra Körmendi here provides a satisfactory introduction to the music of a composer whose works are not as well-known as they deserve (with the obvious exception, for Ravel, of "Boléro"). She appears to master the technical difficulties well, and although her performance is not perhaps as flamboyant or as individualistic as one would expect from more famous names (and although the engineering has allowed a trifle too much mechanical noise for my taste), I found the CD as a whole to be well worth its price. The character of the individual movements is well brought out, and it was particularly interesting to listen to the Tombeau de Couperin, where Ravel manages to combine the typical ancient dances used by Couperin with his own inimitable and decidedly modern style. Gaspard de la nuit is a tone poem, concluded by the incredibly difficult "Scarbo"; I cannot compare Ms. Körmendi's performance with any other, but I found listening to her version "made sense" of Ravel's music.

This 1988 recording was Naxos's first attempt at Ravel's piano music. Some years later the company engaged francophone pianist Francois-Joel Thiollier to record all of Ravel's piano works on two CDs. If you are an expert (or if you require a more thorough approach to Ravel) and are looking for this music at the Naxos price, then I suggest you turn to those two volumes.
