Music reviews of Rock & Roll OverMusic Review: One of the best KISS records out there Rating: 5 Stars
ROCK AND ROLL OVER(1976). KISS' fifth studio album.
By 1976,KISS band members Gene Simmons("The Demon"),Paul Stanley("The Starchild"),Ace Frehley("The Spaceman"),and Peter Criss("The Catman")had seen and done everything. After they had had lots of photo shoots with lots of woman in the photos, after they had had a breakthrough smash hit with their ballad "Beth",there was nothing that was going to stop them-and people knew it. And on November 11,1976,one year after their live record ALIVE! had been released and eight months after their DESTROYER album had come out,KISS released their fifth studio album,ROCK AND ROLL OVER.How did the album turn out? Read on for my review of this and I'll give you a rundown of every song:
I WANT YOU is one of KISS' best and most underrated songs, and it is one heck of a way to open an album. It starts off as sort of a ballad with Paul Stanley playing accoustic guitar and singing softly and gently, and then,it gets hard and mean. Basically,to sum it up,this is a typical KISS song, but it sure is a good one!
With a song that starts off with lyrics like "Put your hand in my pocket;grab onto my rocket" you pretty much know that you will be in for a ride with the song-and everything I just said is a good way to describe the second song off of this album,TAKE ME. This song is a fun, dirty ride that you'll be wanting to play over and over after you've heard it for the first time.
CALLING DR. LOVE is one of the finest songs from the catalogue of both KISS and Gene Simmons. It is about a Dr. who calls himself a "doctor of love",claims to be full of sin,and it has everything a good song needs:good lyrics, good performances, good singing(Gene Simmons sings this song with a lot of enthusiasm in his voice)and maybe even a little bit of ego--hey,ego can be a good thing SOMETIMES,am I right,or am I wrong? I guess it is just depending on the situation, but here is a little unknown fact:Gene Simmons wrote this song out of inspiration after watching a THREE STOOGES episode in a hotel room he was in in Evansville,Indiana-I wonder what the episode was all about.
LADIES ROOM is dirty and is full of sin,but it's hillarious as all get out.
BABY DRIVER,the first offering from Peter Criss off of this album,is a really cool song-the idea of babies getting behind a wheel is kind of scary and far fetched, but hey, that is a fun thing about writing songs, which makes this song another winner off of this album!!!!
LOVE 'EM AND LEAVE 'EM is pretty much what goes on in the mind of Gene Simmons half the time-but,I am a songwriter myself, and letting your mind express itself through a song is sometimes a smart thing to do,so while this is not one of KISS' best songs,it is pretty good for what it is.
MR.SPEED sounds like a "Please come to me,I've got what you want" message someone might send out to a girl who they wanted to go out with, and that is why it is so good-it is catchy, and the whole song itself is fast talking and fast thinking.
SEE YOU IN YOUR DREAMS is sweet and a little bit funny. Gene Simmons sings it from the point of view of a guy who's girlfriend had a bad time at a party, and the song is pretty much saying "It'll Be Alright" with a sweet, fast talking voice and fun, nice, and catchy lyrics.
HARD LUCK WOMAN is kind of "Beth:Part II"-Peter Criss sings it from the point of view of a guy who went out with a girl named Rags, who was a sailor's only daughter, and even though he has to leave her and move on,he leaves nice words behind to her and tells her that someday she'll find her man-now how nice and sweet is that-after all,we thought that the guys in KISS just thought about themselves and girls and that they didn't have hearts(sorry for the sarcasm,I just HAD to put that in there). Little Unknown Fact:When this song became a hit, even though most people knew that it was a KISS song, there were some people who thought that it was a Rod Stewart song.
MAKIN' LOVE is a really fun and dirty way to close an album-the lyrics live up to it's title. Enough said.
Go out and get this album. Not only is it awesome, but, don't forget,KISS

Description of Rock & Roll OverUK-only two CD set, an installment in the popular 2-for-1 series, which combines two hit albums into one convenient package. The 2-for-1 series is perfect for fans looking to complete their collections and for music lovers searching for something more than just a standard 'hits' package. Universal. 2009. As the follow-up to their unusually experimental Destroyer (nonetheless one of Kiss's best albums ever), Rock and Roll Over, released the same year, contains more conventional three-chord material. That's not a bad thing, since Kiss at their peak arguably did three-chord arena-rock better than anyone else. "Calling Dr. Love" was a hit single, as was the surprisingly bittersweet (for Kiss) "Hard Luck Woman." "I Want You" is an unnerving mix of tenderness and tension, while "Take Me" is understandably urgent. Although this was material that would become conventional over the years--thanks to legions of copycat bands--it still sounds good today, probably because whether they're being sleazy or sweet, Kiss sound like they mean it. -- Genevieve Williams
