Music reviews of Revenge

Music Review: Excellent Album(4.5 Stars)
Rating: 4 Stars

REVENGE(1992).KISS' fifteenth album(not counting any of their greatest hits CDS and any of their live records).

The year-1991.By then,KISS had been big for almost exactly two decades, and Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had proved that even if they weren't wearing make-up and even if their original guitarist Ace Frehley and original drummer Peter Criss weren't accompanying them on their albums, that KISS could still be popular and still be a good band. So,how did KISS' first album of the 90's meausure up? Read on for my review of this and I'll give you my thoughts, comments, and opinions on every song on this album as well as the album itself:

UNHOLY is a really hard, mean, and good way to open an album. It feautures killer guitar work from Bruce Kulick, and Gene Simmons sings this song with a very angry voice and sounds energetic while singing this--one of KISS' best non-makeup songs, and probably one of the best songs out of all of their songs. If you put CREATURES OF THE NIGHT(the song)in a blender with Motley Crue's SHOUT AT THE DEVIL song and Metallica's song SOME KIND OF MONSTER,this song would be the result--and that's a good thing.

TAKE IT OFF is a VERY dirty song;however,it is LOADS of fun. It also fits right on a KISS record--Paul Stanley sings it about strippers, dirty minds, girls(of course!)and things similiar to all of the things I already mentioned mixed in together--this song is really catchy. Male KISS fans should be quite satisfied with it.

TOUGH LOVE is a really interesting track. It has the words "I still love you,but that doesn't mean that I don't want our love to be rough and tough" written all over it-and that is what makes it such a good song. Not one of KISS' best songs, but still really good--Paul Stanley sings this song with a tough voice and a lot of interest and enthusiasm, and Bruce Kulick's guitar work on this track and his background vocals sound really good also.

SPIT,the second offering from Gene Simmons on this album,is a typical Gene Simmons song, but a really funny one also. The lyrics are really rude, really crude, and really funny(especially one verse of this song)and at one part you hear Bruce Kulick play a part of the STAR SPANGLED BANNER on guitar.Overall, don't expect this song to be a masterpiece, and don't expect it to be one of the best KISS songs either--expect it to be what I said it is(really rude, really crude, and really funny)and you should be satisfied--this song does a good job at filling up space on a CD.

GOD GAVE ROCK 'N ROLL TO YOU II is really nice and touching. After Gene Simmons,Paul Stanley,Bruce Kulick, and Bob Ezrin found out that Eric Carr(RIP)had heart cancer(which eventually took his life on November 24,1991 when he was only fourty-one years old-rest in peace Eric)they(Simmons,Stanley, and Ezrin)decided to do a tribute to Carr. This song is a sequel to an Argent song from the 70's called GOD GAVE ROCK 'N ROLL TO YOU--some of the lyrics from the original song are here, and some lyrics that were written by Simmons,Stanley, and Ezrin as a tribute to Eric(Eric Carr;Eric Singer is the drummer on this album;I'll talk more about that later on in this review)were included here also--they are all really touching. It is a really nice duet between Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and in my opinion,it is better than the original song--I heard Argent's version of that song and didn't care much for it.

DOMINO is a really funny and cool song, and out of all the tracks that Gene Simmons contributed to this record, this was the most popular of those tracks(and probably the most popular song on the whole album)and it is my favorite song out of all of the songs on this record. Gene Simmons sings it from the point of view of a guy who dated a really young girl named Domino. With lyrics like "It's a Sticky Situation if she ain't old enough to vote" and "Every d**n time I walk through that door,it's the same d**n thing. That b***h bends over and I forget my name...Ow!" you have a very interesting, funny, and a good song, and maybe a little bit of a disturbing song also(OK,this song isn't disturbing,I just threw that part in to be sarcastic...sorry)!

HEART OF CHROME is absolutely briliant. A lot of KISS fans and critics diss this song..but it's not stupid...and it's not really a stretch either. It's a song about the same thing that happens in real life...a guy's ex-girlfriend gets mad at him, breaks up with him,and then she gets back at him,and takes it to far("You Taped Our Sexy Conversations and You Sold Them To The BBC)...that has happened in real life before, and I think writing a song about that was a smart idea. Am I right,or am I wrong?

THOU SHALT NOT is a little bit lame, but it is another interesting song off of this record and is pretty good. Gene Simmons sings it from the point of view of a,let's say,a criminal in New York City who, after being approached by a man in black to kiss the ring on his hand(the guy in black is the guy with the ring on his hand, just so you don't get confused)this guy(the guy who Gene sings this song from the point of view of)is MAD!!! Gene Simmons sure does have a creative and interesting imagination--and it works here and shows here!

EVERY TIME I LOOK AT YOU is a really slow song, but it is a really nice song also. It is sung from the point of view of a guy who hurt his wife/girlfriend's feelings, and now he wants her to forgive him and believe in him also...the lyrics, music, and singing on this song are all really pretty, and the lyrics have a lot of passion in them. A fine collaboration between Paul Stanley and Bob Exrin.

PARALYZED,the last Gene Simmons fronted song on this album,is interesting. Gene Simmons sings this song with the words "I'm totally out of it" in his singing voice, but that pretty much sums up the whole song(it's a cool song)...thought your life was bad? Wait until you hear this song...even though it may not have been written about this,I think it describes how some people who are totally out of it can really be.

I love the song I JUST WANNA. Got an ex-girlfriend and/or an ex-wife who you've got something to say to? This song could help you out with choosing what to say to her and/or with what you already want to say to her--more "ideas" maybe--this song is very cool and very funny.

CARR JAM 1981,which is the last track on this album, shows how talented Eric Carr really was. This track is a clip of Carr's drumming from the early 80's after he had joined KISS,and according to what Dale Sherman said in his BLACK DIAMOND book, the guitar on this track was played by Ace Frehley. I'd say that if you want to end an album with a tribute to a former band member who had just died, this would be a good way to do just that.

REVENGE is an excellent KISS record. Considering the fact that Eric Carr was supposed to be the drummer on this record but his poor health was what kept him from getting to play drums on it(like I alredy said,Eric Singer was just supposed to be a permanent substitute for Eric Carr on this record, but he ended up becoming their drummer after Carr died)this record is maybe a little bit...uneven...but it still is really good. You can tell that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were experimenting with new sounds as musicians when they were making this album and writing material for it...both Simmons and Stanley did a really good job at just that, and their performances here are stellar...Bob Ezrin helped KISS get back in full motion when they were going through a hard time in their career. Also, this album feautures the last three songs Vinnie Vincent EVER wrote with KISS(UNHOLY,HEART OF CHROME,and I JUST WANNA)so,in several different ways, this album is kind of a KISS souvenir.

Be sure to get a copy of this album...you won't be dissapointed by it and you'll be glad you did buy it.
