Music reviews of Love Gun

Music Review: Last Kiss...
Rating: 5 Stars

Love Gun saw the original KISS line-up firing on all four cylinders and was in my opinion the group at the height of their powers. It was their second studio album in a row with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, who I think got the best ever sound out of them. He certainly knew how to record drums..Peter's drumming has (had) never sounded better. And, as with most hard rock/metal albums, it sounds best when you crank it up REAL REAL LOUD!!

I had just gotten into Kiss a month or two before this album came out (I was nine, very soon to be 10) and I can't forget how excited me and my music loving brothers were when we first got this album, which was not a disappointment. As with most KISS albums, things get off to a tremendous start with a great Paul Stanley song, in this case 'I Stole Your Love', which Paul says was partially inspired by the guitar riff to 'Burn', by Deep Purple. Powerful vocal from Paul, heavy and catchy as all hell guitar riff, great solo, solid drumming, etc...a real classic. After this, we get two Gene songs, 'Christine Sixteen', featuring Eddie Kramer on piano and a spoken word part by it's author, and the highly underrated hard rocker 'Got Love For Sale', a song that the band has never, to my knowledge, performed live (a shame). I particular love the bass playing on it and if you listen close enough, you can hear just a dash of acoustic guitar and a piano here and there. Great drumming again, and I love the guitar solo as well, which is, like most of Frehley's solos, very melodic and right to the point.

'Shock Me' was guitarist Ace Frehley's vocal debut on a Kiss record and it really is one heck of a song. I think Ace's songs got worse after he started to sing them, but this song (and 'Into The Void', which is like 'Shock Me, Part 2') are the highly notable exceptions. After this, we get what is practically a re-write of 'Rock and Roll All Nite' in Paul's catchy rock and roller 'Tomorrow and Tonight'. For one of Paul's lesser songs, this is still pretty good.

The second half gets off to a great start with Paul's dangerous sounding hard rocker 'Love Gun', with it's author once again in top vocal form. After this, we get what I think it's the album's low point, Peter's 'Hooligan'. Like 'Baby Driver' from the previous album, this is my least favorite track on the album, showing that Kiss should never have allowed any of Peter's tunes after 'Beth' to appear on an album. For the album's worst song, it's still not completely horrible, though and at least it's better than 'Baby Driver' and 'Dirty Living', which I wish was saying more.

Things pick right back up, however (and stay up) with two more Gene songs, the unusual, but great jungle gym hard rocker 'Almost Human', which once again features some very cool bass playing, and 'Plaster Caster'. I had no idea when I first heard it what the song was about.... remember, I was a young lad of nine who had just gotten exposed to hard rock just a few months ago and didn't even know what a groupie was. I think this is a catchy, lovable song that can be enjoyed even if you don't know what it's about.

I am huge fan of the album's closing number, the cover of 'And Then He Kissed Me', which Kiss wisely changed to 'And Then SHE Kissed Me' (even though imagine how daring and bold it would have been if they didn't change the gender!). Awesome rhythm track to this, especially all of the percussion. I love how the bass supports the melody by playing along with it. And, another strong vocal by Paul, who really sings the dung out of this song. A more than satisfying ending to this album, which in some ways would mark the end of an era for KISS. I don't think they have put out another album like it since. Buy this album!!

Description of Love Gun

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the Glam Hard Rockers, originally released in 1977. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.
The last album with the original lineup (unless you count the 1998 reunion Psycho Circus), Love Gun contains a few missteps (such as the reworking of the classic "Then He Kissed Me") but is mostly packed to the gills with the good, fun, trashy rock & roll that made Kiss legendary. One frequently overlooked high point is the song "Almost Human," which strikes a positively creepy note. Then there's Ace Frehley's first stint on lead vocals with "Shock Me," the un-PC but affectionate "Plaster Caster," and the well-known title track. True, there's no equivalent to "Rock & Roll All Night" (the obvious attempt falls flat), but that doesn't stop this from being not only classic Kiss, but classic 1970s rock. -- Genevieve Williams
