Music reviews of Lick It Up

Music Review: A Classic
Rating: 5 Stars

Out of all the 100 greatest moments of rock 'n roll(VH1 and MTV have done several specials by the same title)KISS' album from 1983, "Lick It Up" is definitely one of those 100 moments. While KISS' material from the 70's remains the band's best work, their material from the 80's and 90's rocks just as hard, and "Lick It Up" would prove to be not only their best album without makeup, but also one of their greatest albums, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. Here is a rundown of every song:

"Exciter"- A good way to open an album. Very catchy. Not one of the best KISS songs out there, but one of the best songs on the whole album. 10/10

"Not For The Innocent"- Probably the weakest track on the whole album, but this is a pretty good song. Very similiar to "It's So Easy" off of Guns 'n Roses' classic 1987 album "Appetite For Destruction"(little unknown fact: According to VH1, Vinnie Vincent is good friends with Axl Rose). 7/10

"Lick It Up"- The best song on the whole album, and the best song KISS recorded without makeup. A classic rock song. 10/10

"Young and Wasted"- On the whole, this is a good song, but the thing that really makes this song as good as it is is Vinnie Vincent's guitar work. 8/10

"Gimme More"-You take Paul Stanley's talent with songwriting as well as Vinnie Vincent's gift to write songs, and you get a really strong and catchy song. 9/10

"All Hell's Breaking Loose"- Another classic KISS song. Also, the best KISS song that was co-written by Eric Carr. 10/10

"A Million To One"- The only ballad on this whole album. Similiar to Slaughter's future 1992 hit "Real Love"(which is funny when you think about it, if you are aware of the controversy some die hard Vinnie Vincent fans started after Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum made it sucessful after The Vinnie Vincent Invasion broke up) and of course, the only ballad that appeared on "Creatures Of The Night", "I Still Love You". I don't know what it is, but Paul Stanley just has a talent for writing ballads. 10/10

"Fits Like A Glove"- If you have ever been interested to know what goes through the mind of Gene Simmons half of the time, then this song might answer your question. A little bit similiar to "Heaven's On Fire" off of KISS' 1984 album "Animalize", but not really. 7/10

"Dance All Over Your Face"- I can see why this song was never released as a single, but it ranks as the fourth best song on the whole album, right after "Lick It Up", "All Hell's Breaking Loose", and "A Million To One". If you have a psycho x-girlfriend or there was a girl who got snobby with you after you tried to date her, then I have one recommendation for you(and by saying this, I am not being sarcastic in any way, shape, or form): Play this song for play it 10/10

"And On The 8th Day"- As "Exciter" was a great way to open this album, "And On The 8th Day" is a great way for this album to end. If you listen closely to the lyrics, you will know exactly what this song is about: It is about the birth and evolution of rock 'n roll, and never taking any nonscence from anyone who gives you a hard time about your dreams. KISS has always been very good out about living out their dreams and not taking any nonscence for the dreams they have, and they have inspired me to do the same thing as well. 9/10

"Lick It Up" will always be one of the greatest albums rock 'n roll ever saw. It came out during a hard point in KISS' career: Original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were gone and out of the group, and their popularity and their albums weren't as good as they had been since 1975, when KISS had released their live gem, "Alive!". But this album, the album that got KISS back on track, meant(and still does mean)what KISS has always stood for: Great music, having a good time, and not letting anybody get in the way of your dreams. "Lick It Up" is a classic rock album, and if you are a fan of KISS, 80's rock, or you just believe in what KISS has always stood for, then this album surely does deserve a spot in your album collection.
