Music Review: Sensual, Sexy, Romantic Sax Play, Kirk Whalum Style

Bottom-Line: Sensual, sexy, romantic sax playing as only Kirk Whalum could deliver it.
Kirk Whalum's 1998 release "For You," is a clear winner. And, if you have a CD player that allows for continues play, program it to do so! This nostalgic CD features songs we have all probably heard before in lyric form, but I loved hearing them interpreted anew via the melodic magic of Kirk Whalum's tenor saxophone; this man never disappoints. He usually includes a traditionally lyric song on all of his albums, and the fact that "For You" is filled with them is a rare treat.
"For You" serves up a collection of melodies rooted in the mystery and magic of romance and love. Recorded live in-studio, Whalum is joined on For You by such contemporary jazz great as Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar), Peter White (Spanish guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tim Heintz (bass, keyboards), Ricky Lawson (drums), and Greg Karukas and Ricky Peterson (keyboards).
The opening track Anytime begins with a classic Kirk Whalum sax riff that sets the tone for the rest of the album. He plays it soft, smooth, and romantic; a tune just right for dinner by candlelight, moonlight, or flickering firelight. From Anytime we race into track No. 2 Ascension, with an up-tempo beat that will have you bobbing your head and tapping your feet under the dinner table, blanket by the fire, or bed sheets. Next up is the Anita Baker classic in Same Ole Love, which will have you dancing and swaying in time with the Sax riffs and soft drum beats.
Track No. 4 My All is classic Kirk Whalum, with softly drawn out saxophone lines (that is the best I can describe them), that insist you look into your lover's eyes and say without words how you feel, letting the music cover you like a warm down blanket. The song is a perfect segue into the Janet Jackson rump bumper That's The Way Love Goes (track No. 5)
Whalum then slows down the tempo yet again as he launches quietly into the title cut, For You (track No. 6), which will have you humming and hopefully smooching softly to the music as it waives through the room on unseen streams of current that fill every corner with warm romance. Did I say mention this guy oozes romance!?
Stevie Wonder receives the nod on track No. 7, All I Do, wherein we hear the first lyrics of the album, followed by Lover for Life (track No. 8) and then a stirring rendition of the Marvin Gaye' classic I Want You, which will have everyone except the mobility challenged, slow dancing and grinding hips to the hypnotic beat.
"For You" finishes off with Goin' in Circles (track No. 10) and at its conclusion I was sorry the music had to end, for I defiantly could have stood to listen to hours more of Kirk Whalum's low sweet sounds! "For You" is for you; get it, you won't regret it!
