Music Review: Retro, so what?

There has been a wave of retro/neo soul music of late with artists ranging from Sharon Jones, Rafael Saadiq and even Amy Winehouse, but this disk by Milwaukee's King's Go Forth, sets the new high bar for the genre. THE OUTSIDERS ARE BACK is loaded with all the ingredients that make great soul music. The first thing you notice is the outstanding lead vocals by Black Wolf. Behind his strong vocals are a backdrop of tight harmonies, surging horn lines and a dynamic rhythm section. Of course what makes this truly a great record are the songs. This sounds like a greatest hits package by an obscure, but talented lost R & B band from the late 60's, early 70's timeframe. Standouts include One day, the ska inflected 1000 SONGS, DON'T TAKE MY SHADOW and NOW WE'RE GONE. These are just the best of a excellent batch of strong songs, without a dud in the bunch. They may not be breaking new territory, but Kings Go Forth have delivered an instant classic that I'm sure convert all those that hear it to become fans.

''Kings Go Forth's popularity is due in large part to its raw and retro R&B sound, which employs funky backbeats, big horns, three-part vocals, and naturalistic, lo-fi production.''-- The OnionIn 2009, Kings Go Forth burst onto the international soul/funk underground with a series of three self-released 45 rpm singles. (The first disc, One Day b/w You're The One, was pressed in an edition of 500 copies that now command up to $200 apiece on various Internet auction sites.) Now signed to Luaka Bop, 'The Outsiders Are Back' was preceded by a 12inch single, Don't Take My Shadow, containing multiple mixes and edits created by the legendary Tom Moulton, a pioneering remixer of the early disco era.
Here at last is a band creating its own immediately identifiable sound from a broad palette of classic R&B (mid-Sixties Chicago, early-Seventies Philadelphia, and other sources far more obscure); setting that sound to Black Wolf's timeless lyrics of love and loss, despair and hope and delivering it all with fierce urgency and undeniable emotional commitment. There is power in Kings Go Forth's multi-ethnic makeup, in their 25year age span (from 30 to 55), and in their unforced command of the soul music idiom. And to date, the soul revival has not produced another band with a vocal blend so rich in tone and feeling.
