Music Review: Witty, charming, musical - altogether delightful.

I am always thrilled to see this album in CD form - I had it on cassette as a child and wore it out through over-listening! Judi Dench is the ideal narrator for a children's recording - she is warm, expressive, and funny. This recording was so well-loved that many of the phrases entered into our family jargon: 'I give buns to the elephants, when I go down to the zoo.' Sometimes the songs have dated a little, or may be unfamiliar to a non-English audience (anyone remember 'I'll sing you one-o'?) but the arrangements are stunning, the singing superb, and the sound effects great. Just listen to the Kings Singers tuning up Old King Cole's fiddles three, or hear the electric train roaring past in one of the musical narratives and you'll understand why this brought so much colour to my childhood.
This is a great introduction to close-harmony singing, if you want a child you love to be exposed to more than kiddy-pop. Many of the poems are classics (A. A. Milne and the like) and there is a perfect balance between the upbeat and the more soothing numbers to keep the little ones entertained for hours. (I bet they can learn to push repeat at a younger age than I learned to turn over a cassette also, so be prepared for reruns!)
