Music Review: SELECTIVE TRAWL THROUGH OLIVER'S LATER RECORDINGS

The CD I'm reviewing is called King Oliver: The New York Sessions (1929-1930) and is on the Bluebird label, but it differs from the one on this page in that the artist is shown as King Of The Hill!!
Oliver's first New York session was in July 1927, and the last in April 1931, but this 22-track compilation begins in October 1929 and trawls selectively through the next twelve months. En route, three alternate takes are included, one of which (Olga) had not been released previously. It's unclear on what basis it's been compiled, and given the choice I'd have preferred alternative titles (for example, St. James Infirmary or When You're Smiling) rather than alternate takes.
The quality of the remastering is excellent, with a full clean sound in which every participant registers clearly. It's apparent how far Oliver had altered his orchestral style (but not his playing technique) since his iconic 1923 Creole Jazz Band recordings, and how much recording techniques had advanced in the intervening period. I have a particularly soft spot for "Everybody Does It In Hawaii" with its unlikely inclusion of Roy Smeck's steel guitar.
