This wonderful recording from King's College, Cambridge, was a favorite of mine long before I found it on CD. Contrary to the main title "Carols for Advent", this contains the entire service including hymns (congregation joining in), lessons & prayers. The track listing would not give you the full picture.

The great men & boys choir, the fabulous organ and chapel acoustic are all rolled into this CD. Carols are sung from different locations in the chapel, giving the effect of the listener sitting directly east (toward the altar) of the choir stalls. Hymns are sung in procession with the choir moving toward and away from the microphones. There's a later version of this service done under Sir Philip Ledger (Thomas Trotter, organ), which is also very good - just not as good as when Sir David Willcocks was choirmaster, in my opinion. The organist is Simon Preston.

For reference, the original 1961 LP is titled "A Procession with Carols on Advent Sunday". It's on Argo (Decca Records), ZRG 5240 (stereo). The color cover shows a crucifer with choristers lined up after him beneath the carved organ screen. Did I already mention this is fantastic?!
