Music reviews of Killswitch EngageMusic Review: Good cd Rating: 4 Stars
I can't say I'm the biggest Kse fan. I became interested when I heard the end of heartache at the end of that resident evil movie. I never thought I'd be a fan of metalcore, but these guys and Underoath changed my mind on that. I loved end of heartache, but was only luke warm towards daylight dies. I really should go back and listen to that one again. I've never heard the two previous albums, except for some live versions that were bonus tracks on EOH.
I have to say though, this is a pretty good cd. Howard's voice is awsome on here. They have a lot more variety on this one than albums past. There's very little filler. They have growth, yet maintain their core sound. The production isn't so good. Actually it's terrible. I just put in daylight dies, and oh my God the difference. This guy should not be allowed to produce albums period. I love pearl Jam and Stone temple pilots, but their sounds got worse with each album. I know this guy's producing the new Pearl Jam album, which I was looking forward to, because I loved their self titled one, but now not so much. He's going to ruin them again. Why they had a producer who doesn't do metal, produce this album is beyond me. The mixing is awful, on the bus on the way to work I could hear the vocals and drums, and that's about it, without cranking up the volume. As someone else has mentioned, the songs could also be a little longer. There are only two songs over four minutes. I'm not saying they should release a bunch of ten minute songs, but just adding some solos would've helped fix that. Also adding an intro or two could've helped. The album is also a little too top heavy, in terms of song quality. The first seven songs are all pretty good, but the last few are somewhat lacking. Still there isn't a bad song on the album, I'd just like them to have mixed it up a bit, that way I have something to look forward to at the end of the cd.
Never Again - 9/10 - Relatively fast paced opener. The chorus is kind of a cool mix of singing and screaming. This one's kind of different from your typical Killswitch engage song, structurewise. The solo's a little too short though. I also would've liked a quiet intro that built up to the song, but oh well. The song's a little too short, but otherwise it's good.
Starting Over - 9/10 - Another faster paced song. Typical metalcore song, screaming verses with clean vocals on the chorus. Kind of cool guitar riff. There's a clean part on the bridge that's pretty cool, but way too short. I would've like a guitar solo too.
The Forgotten - 8/10 - Kind of clumsy intro, but it goes into a nice groove. The verses have a nice upper mid tempo pace. The chorus slows down. Some different vocal styles on this song. I like the fast paced bridge.
Reckoning - 8/10 - A fast paced song. I don't like the constant hitting of the snare which knocks a point off of my rating. Fortunately the entire song isn't filled with that. This one took some growing for me, but I'm liking it more and more.
The Return - 9/10 - This is a ballad. It's probably the softest song they've ever done. You had to see this coming. If memory serves me there was a ballad type song on daylight dies. There's a cool guitar affect. I love the vocals in this one. It's a nice way to show off his voice.
A Light In A Darkened World - 9/10 - General concensus on here this song seems to be the favorite. It's a faster one. The chorus has a groove to it. Nice vocals. This one's WAY too short though.
Take Me Away - 9/10 - This one's very different for the band. It's a softer one, but there's still a good pace to it. It's heavier than return though. Clean verses, with a heavier chorus. It does seem placed a little too close to the other ballad on here, but there's another at the end so maybe they wanted to keep some space between them as well. Maybe they should've switched return and reckoning to break it up a bit more.
I Would Do Anything - 7/10 - Vintage Killswitch engage. Kind of slow and plodding song, that picks up a little speed. Lots of screaming, clean vocals on the chorus. This formula is getting a little old for me, not just for this band but the genre in general. That's one of my main complaints about the genre is the lack of diversity. Still it's a good song though, just nothing special.
Save Me - 7/10 - This one picks up the pace a bit. It's faster. Again it's a typical metalcore song. Nothing special, but still it's a decent song.
Lost - 7/10 - The last ballad of the album, and it's the weakest of them. Still it's not a bad song, but I keep expecting to hear the chorus to return on this one. That's never a good thing. It is a little to similar to that song. Still it's ok too, but nothing original or special here. The vocals are great as always. It's also a little too emo, but then again so is this album.
This Is Goodbye - 8/10 - This is another faster one. There really isn't anything special about this one either, but it is a step above the previous few songs. A decent closing song.
If you like the band, and are willing to accept them growing a bit, listening to their two previous albums you should see this coming, then definately give this one a listen. Dispite the album's flaws, they make up for them with good songs, which is something that bands seem to be struggling with these days.
