Music Review: Modern Arabic pop

There are already way too many reviews for this album. The thing about Khaled is that many of his songs are great, and some are ruined by bad production. I'm not talking about his earlier "cheb" work, which had production most would call primitive. In fact, I find his earlier work better in many ways; there's that soul and feeling that only homegrown rai music really has, even though the recording studios were cheap.
This album is very modernized and not as repetitive as his more traditional rai music. Sahra is really a modern global pop album. It includes his huge hit Aicha (which is indeed a good song, mostly sung in French, with the melodic hooks of the best pop music) and the powerful opening song Sahra. In contrast to some of his earlier work, the production really lets his voice stand out, and he has a very powerful, unique voice. The other tracks include a lot of fusion, some of the best of which is Oran Marseille, where his Arabic singing alternates with hard French rap (similar in concept to Cheb Mami's song Parisien du Nord). There are a few reggae fusions as well, with interesting results.
The letdown in this album is the production, which ruins some of the songs for me. The background instruments work well sometimes, but on several songs the saxaphone totally takes over with a solo. These saxaphone solos belong elsewhere - they don't even try to fit in with the music, or sound remotely different from bad American pop saxaphone solos. I can't stand to hear them, and it ruins the song. On some of the songs, the background music is simply unremarkable, when it should be remarkable.
It doesn't really suprise me that this pop-oriented album appeals so much to otherwise non-world music fans. But I hope Khaled will record an album that goes back to his roots. If you're going to have the finest recording studios and technology, why not include ouds, Arabic orchestra, flamenco or traditional music in the production? I mean, if it's going to be fusion, it should be good fusion, instead of drawing on American styles so much.
